We could make Silva work just like Loricatus, except she upgrades leathery stuff.

What if Silva upgraded leathery stuff like Loricatus, but if an eligible item is not wielded in right hand, tried to upgrade wooden secondary material of the item? Right now, the player has no way of changing the secondary material of things like spears, axes or any other weapon with wooden haft. Giving Silva the option to turn all hafts up to ebony could be nice.

Now, no the subject of championship gifts, I find that many gods seem to lack in their championship gifts. So:

SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
Valpurus
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
He's got a strong gift, I think, but what about adding some variety? The first time, he could always give you a valpurium sword and shield, but subsequent times, he could give you a random valpurium weapon instead (no special weapons like staffs of wondrous smells or daggers fo venom, only normal weapons). Thus you would get some leeway in using other weapons with Valpurus.

Legifer
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
Hm, I have to confess I have probably never become a champion of Legifer, or I don't remember, so I don't know what does he give you. Off the top of my head, highly enchanted (+4 to +6) helmet of piercing perception would be interesting, as it is otherwise overshadowed by helmet of Int. He could also give you Turox, which seems to fit his niche of huge explosions.

Atavus
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
That arcanite plate mail is great. Rather than championship gifts, I would actually love to see him giving you something after each successful prayer. It's somewhat discouraging to see he's pleased but nothing happens. What if he gave you a random item with maximum price of favour/2 after each successful prayer? That would be flavourful, sometimes interesting and hopefully not too powerful.

Dulcis
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
Lyre of charm is a fitting championship gift, I think.

Seges
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
An unusual championship gift for Seges could be training you End. Quite useful, I think, and not seen in other gods, so interesting to try. As a goddess of health and life, I was thinking maybe amulet of life saving would be nice, but that would quickly become overpowered as you could hoard them. Maybe temporary life saved status instead?

Sophos
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
Sophos is a god of knowledge, he could maybe grant you knowledge of permanent beneficial status effect, randomly selected from telecontrol, ESP, searching, invisible. Telecontrol and ESP can already be gained permanently, so no OP stuff here, searching is nice but not necessary and invisibility is two-edged sword. I think it could be an interesting gift.

Silva
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
Maybe one of the following items could make a nice championship gift: phoenix feather cloak of fire resistance (useful and cool, plus life saving for players who found no fire resist items), green/blue/purple crystal cuirass (there was a thread where 4zb4 was going to make special stone armors, with high AV and high penalties, flavourful gift), weeping blade (a crystal blade!).

Loricatus
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
Pretty please, give him adamant thunder hammer as a championship gift! Yes, it's strong, but also very dangerous to use and requires high AStr to actually use well. And as the smith god, he deserves to have a cool weapon gift.

Mellis
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
He's already strong as hell. If anything, he should give you a golden banana!

Cleptia
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
Dagger of venom, cloak of invisibility and gauntlets of dexterity immediately come to my mind. Maybe randomly selected for each championship gift?

Nefas
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
She's already a minion god, so giving a strong mistress as a championship gift (warlady?) would be cool.

Scabies
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
She just got a ring of unchanging. Cool.

Infuscor
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
Arcanite or octiron staff of wondrous smells. She's wizard god and magical staff is absolutely fitting.

Cruentus
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
I would actually like to see him giving you some orc allies. But a good championship gift could be a random two-handed weapon (2H sword or scimitar, halberd, battle-axe) made of high-level material. Cruentus worshipper as a warrior with huge weapon seems rather fitting.

Mortifer
SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
Here, I would really like to see him NOT giving you multiple Neerc Se-ulbs. It's a unique artifact! As with Valpurus above, let him give you Neerc the first time, then give a highly enchanted scythe (his aligned weapon). Scythes are cool.

Could you

use a dwarf to shatter some wands of teleport?

Wow, Sherarax has no dialog of her own! I'll have to take a look at that!
Posted by red_kangaroo, Nov 3, 2016 at 11:51 am
I'd say talents should still be random. They cannot be easily startscummed right now, as they become apparent only after a while, and they can be very powerful in the long run.

The housewives, slaves and Petrus wives are, well, trained to just be homemakers and/or slaves so it doesn't make sense for them to hold an enlightening conversation when it's unlikely they received any kind of academic education.

Well, we could make the housewives sci-talk about cooking, laundry, kids (cooking kids ).

I know I'm suggesting this in gender equality thread. Please don't throw me to angry housewives.

You're not playing an all-knowing monster encyclopedia of a character. You were raised by hippos. You are not smart. The only way you learn and become smarter is by reading books about gods and talking about science with people, which isn't really relevant to say, identifying the sex of a given monster or animal.
If you can't immediately tell what a monster is by looking at it and using common sense, then it makes absolute sense for the player to refer to the monster as "it".

I like this explanation!

4zb4 wrote
To make things even more confusing, maned female lions are also a thing in the real world.

4zb4 wrote
Again mutant bunnies are the exception here (since you can't tell at a glance what sex a rabbit is without having in-depth knowledge of them) but that might be a gameplay issue since it lets you know that two bunnies might mate and produce more horrid offspring to kill.

I too think it's mostly for gameplay reasons that bunnies have noted genders. Even though you generally slaughter them all, so it doesn't make that much of a difference.

4zb4 wrote
It would not make sense for the player to say, use the look command and hover over an NPC and see, for example "A Lunethia guard stands here. Xhe does not care about you" because it would make sense that the player, being from a society that uses only "he" or "she" to try to use what they believe is the most appropriate pronoun.

Agreed.

4zb4 wrote
Dialog from NPCs however could be fine, as the player would be able to audibly hear what the person is saying and any confusion produced on the part of the actual real-life player of the game would make perfect sense and be entirely appropriate.

Why not.

4zb4 wrote
However I like the idea of having a randomly assigned player character even better. i.e. no choice of whether your player is male or female.

I think this would be the best, too.

4zb4 wrote
Perhaps the idea of being able to assign pronouns would best be relegated to a menu option, and otherwise defaulted to player sex?

That actually sounds great. Way better than picking your pronoun at each game start.

4zb4 wrote
I think it'd be best just to leave the chest bare, although with a different sprite for male/female so they are distinct.

I like this.

Let's not forget that the very premise of the game isn't politically correct.

Yeah, and it should retain it's humor and silly jokes. But I think it's possible to try some changes and not go overboard.

If usage of 'it' for intelligent nonhuman humanoids is supposed to reflect the player's bias against species or characters they consider inferior because of their appearance, perhaps charisma should be a factor that overrides a character's pronouns attribute and uses 'it' instead. For instance, orcs, kobolds, and goblins could all be given 'he', 'she', or 'they' pronouns, but any character (human or nonhuman) with charisma less than half the player's charisma would be referred to as 'it'. The more charismatic the player becomes, the more of a disrespectful asshole they become.

Thinking again, the meaning of the charisma stat in most RPGs that have it (and presumably IVAN) is a bit broader than just appearance; it also includes a broad range of social skills useful to the player. Disrespecting other characters by misgendering them is not really compatible with these social skills, so that usage would have to be confined to "private" speech (ie. the game's text log), and not spoken lines like "Oh my frog, they've got a golden eagle feather head of Elpuri!".
Or, calling people 'it' would be something that low-charisma characters do.

While Cha does probably reflect both appearence and social skills, I see no problem with high-Cha player being all sunshine and honey when talking to others, but call them 'it' in game messages. High Cha would basically equal to being a sociopath, which I find disturbingly funny.

capristo wrote
That makes me think it has less to do with charisma and more with intelligence. The "it" seems to me more referring to them as savage creatures with lower intelligence. And of course this is relative - to the humans the kobolds are savage dumb brutes, even though they may have their own society

Yeah, I think it really reflects the humans' view of "lesser races".

capristo wrote
I do think it would be somewhat interesting to read "she blocks your attack" or "he hits you" when fighting a goblin. But we should look at each species individually and decide which ones have a discernible difference.

Definitely. I still want to have kobold whelps and goblin grannies.

This. This so much! I LOVE it.

'zie' and stuff

If I read this in game, I would probably report a typo. But I'm not a native speaker, so it might be much less confusing a word for other than I think.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
Xinroch's tomb should be a part of that contrast too.

Yup.

Thinking about it, a nice first step, if fejoa is not against it, would be to have the terrifying tomb guard master be a kind and polite woman (and still a deadly warrior).

Serin-Delaunay wrote
Agreed. I like that you can go directly into the gameplay without spending too long customising. Well, except for the two story screens. And the several restarts if you decide you want to try to win.

/sarcasm

We should probably decide whether we wish to somehow remove start scumming and have quick easy starts, or go full point buy.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
And it is a gender issue because of how these species' sex and gender are currently represented in game (by which I mean not represented).

That's one thing I always hated in RPGs. PC (half-)orcs are treated with some respect (even if begrudging). NPC orcs are slaughtered. I'm generalizing, but it's quite common.

IVAN has a loooooot of gender issues, many of which have been addressed here.

And many of which should remain in my opinion, because they paint the crapsack world of IVAN. Some, however, should be addressed.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* Rename attribute "Sex" to "Pronouns"

I don't think it's that important to rename something no-one but people looking at source will concern themselves about... but if anyone is willing to do it, I say let them.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* More diverse women in towns

I'm strongly against removing the "crapsack theocratic/capitalist/patriarchal hellholes of Attnam and New Attnam" feel you talk about. The sexism is "justified" in that it gives the Attnamese society the feel of being wrong. As I said above, Attnamese sexism paints a nice crapsack picture of the IVAN world.

However, I would love to see more female NPCs in new towns. Mondedr is supposed to be a town free of Attnamese influence. I believe it could be nice to make it evident from the dialogue of Mondedr NPCs how different the points of view of Attnam and Mondedr are, about women and everything.

I also have some ideas about Tweraifian freedom fighters being mostly female force. They couldn't have just disappeared, right? Neither could they have been all sold as slaves.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* More human women science talking

Definitely. Especially the priestess.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* Women talking more often about things that aren't men

Why not, but the lines better be interesting and/or funny! No need to add lines just for the sake of not talking about men.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* Kobolds, Goblins, Orcs (maybe more) should not have 'it' pronouns

I actually like that they are refrered to as "it". In most RPG games, the humans behave as if they owned the world. Most heroes slaughter "lesser races" with no regard to them being intelligent beings. Again, it paints a nice Picture of the crooked perspective of all humans in IVAN that these races are "it". It is and should be seen as derogatory, as the humans feel as a superior race.

Let it remain. We could add some female NPCs for these races, though. Orc woad warriors and such. Still referred to as "it".

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* Add 'they' option to Pronouns attribute, or split Pronouns into 5 text attributes

I don't think that's such a good idea. Using 'they' or 'zie' in the way you describe is a neologism that would confuse the heck out of most players. And my eyes would hurt reading 'zie'. Please, don't use 'zie'.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* Long hair good

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* Make randomly spawning humanoids have randomised Pronouns, beard, hair, chest attributes

OK, but no bearded mistresses, I dare you. Leaving all dwarves with beards but making some female would be hilarious (see Terry Pratchet).

Generally, I think it depends on the particular creature. Some should remain one gender race because of rule of fun, some should be changed.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* Change some town NPCs' Pronouns attribute and/or add new NPCs who aren't men

Add new towns to contrast with Attnam, leave Attnam be the sexism crapsack dictatorship it is now.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* Let the player have any Pronouns attribute
* Spend points to increase stats at birth

I really like the simple beginning the game has now. Other roguelikes may take quite a while to create a PC in, but IVAN just let's you start and build yourself in-game. Especially for new players, this might be an interesting boon as opposed to contrieved character creation.

That said, eh, I probably don't care one way or another.

Serin-Delaunay wrote
* Choose skin colour, hair colour, hairstyle, beardability, and pronouns at birth, using points if you feel cruel

See "contrieved character creation" above.

And I really, really love the quote Kaethos has about your white skin and violent personality. Again, it makes a nice piece of background for me and I would loath to see it go.

If everyone agrees to have variable skin color, though...

Serin-Delaunay wrote
Also, why are there so many rape jokes in the website's random quote box? If we want to decrease misogyny in the game, we should also try to decrease the misogyny on the website.

I guess because these are quotes from young male fandom.

EDIT:

Not actually a gendre issuve, but I would *love* to have a town of non-human NPCs. Kobold families with whelps, baby orcs, goblin grannies...

EDIT 2:

Going by humanoid creatures and whether they should be of varied gandre and appearence:

Angel - I actually like they are all female. Not a reason for this, I just like it.
Dark knight - Should be both male and female. No need to change their appearance, they're all wearing heavy armor.
Dark mage - Should be both male and female. I request at least one skimpy sorceress, though, beacause reasons and rule of fun!
Gibberling - What are actually those? I think they could even remain genderless, a weird underground creature.
Goblin - Should be both male and female, but described as "it" in game messages, because humans see them as lesser race.
Golem - Genderless.
Imp - I have no idea if they have or don't have sex. Female imps would be OK, though.
Invisible stalker - Genderless.
Dwarf - Should be both male and female, but both with massive beards. Because rule of fun and Terry Pratchet.
Kobold - Should be both male and female, but described as "it" in game messages, because humans see them as lesser race.
Mistress - Female-only, definitely. They are the counterwieght to Attnamese patriarchism. Attnam is misogynistic, mistresses hate males, so we have both extremes covered, which I really like.
Necromancer - Should be both male and female. No need to change their appearance, they're all wearing masks and robes.
Orc - Should be both male and female, but described as "it" in game messages, because humans see them as lesser race.
Punisher - They are only found as torturers in my PR of Attnam Catacombs. I would say it's fine for them to be male-only, but eh.
Siren - Female-only. Don't go the DCSS route. (In their hunt for "correctness", they removed mermaids because they are by definition female and using their female charms to goad males. I say let the mythology be!)
Skeleton - "It", even if they were fe/male before.
Werewolf - Should be both male and female. Female human-form werewolf sprite would be awsome!
Zombie - "It", even if they were fe/male before.
Farmer+hunter+wife - See "sexistic Attnam", these are OK as they are. Same goes to male-only guards, banana growers and female slaves.

Adding female named uniques would be great, but probably wait until new towns are introduced. Attnam does not deserve female NPCs.

8:44 pm	fejoa @red_kangaroo: Awesome work! Can you start a thread showcasing some of the changes?
3:11 pm	red_kangaroo I have submitted a new PR for Attnam Catacombs. What do you think?

Here you go.

Highlights:
* Cathedral Cellar vodka can no longer be freely stolen. Sorry, I liked it as well.
* Imprisoned necromancer is no longer lonely - several prisoners and jailers were added.
* Imprisoned necromancer talks about eating bones and drinking blood - so now he can do it!
* Special room added to Catacombs.
* Last level of Catacombs has a boss fight.

I would like to know how people feel about this side-dungeon now. There are rewards for clearing the Catacombs now, but hopefully not enough to break the game.
Posted by red_kangaroo, Oct 31, 2016 at 1:59 pm
This is completely a personal preference, but I always liked that most memorable NPCs from IVAN have weird and distinct names. I would really like to see for the TX NPCs to also have names, rather than just their title.

Something like:
* Anmah the imprisoned necromancer
* Fryndal the quartermaster (Fry always makes me remember Futurama, instead of dungeon shopkeeper )
* High Lord Kauhistuttava the master tomb guard

Fejoa, would you mind if I PR'd to name them, or do you have some other names for them in mind?
