Yeah, I generally train all weapon classes except axes. If you keep your endurance low the you can train faster. I've actually gotten leprosy intentionally to bring endurance down. I've done the level 65 training a few times but it always results in untimely death from uberzombies and the like. The key to keeping your indurance down is knowing seges and mellis. Use banana peels/ heavy crap to train and wear the best armour (eg tamed elite guard) for training and then heal with a potion or a prayer to seges when your HP gets low. Giant carnivourous plants give you 20 exp points each hit which makes you fly through the early training levels. ITs easy to get every weapon class up to 13/14 and dont go higher than 19 unless you wnat uberzobie death.
Changing material of main weapon make you start from scratch for experience with that weapon (but not that class). This makes a Gift from Valpurus more valuable - end game material at start of game means no exp loss. Frankly I prefer the shield since there are no artifact shields in IVAN 0.50.

How much do shields help? I've never used a shield, usually double-wield weapons. Any #s on how much more effective a shield is at blocking?

From what I remember (from what I believe was posted in the "too lazy to make a thread" thread) weapons become better than shields for blocking over time as your skill with them increases.
I don't know exact numbers though, i'll go dig through that thread.

EDIT: Found it, but still no exact numbers. Could've sworn there were though...

As the game is balanced currently it's generally accepted that two weapons are the best way to go.

Another question, what do you consider that is better: wielding two weapons or a weapon and a shield? I have a valpurium two handed sword+6, a valpurium shield and a flaming ruby sword+6, and I seem to do quite well with the two swords as I block many attacks and have two strikes in one turn... but I would like to know if having a high skill with the shield will make me almost untouchable and would be better that way. Right now my char has 41 dex and 24 agi.
System would indicate in graphic if person is mounted on horse or not.
Same system also show if person mounted on boar, elephant, polar bear etc.
Or if person mounted on ass.
Ivan find mounting on ass funny.

If you like to melée named baddies a good shield and skill saves you getting one-shotted. (most of the time)

Unfortunately the shield is usually only good for 1-2 shots against most named baddies, even when made of Valpurium...

It's best to just avoid named baddies when they spawn, continue on your quest, and then come back later when your overpowered. They are only leveled when you first see them, so when you come back you should be able to handle them. That seems to be the key to killing them.
