the other day i tried to use a banana as a weapon and i discover that bananas actually count as blunt weapons. Sadly, even tho the banana was pretty decent at taking out small enemies i couldn't defeat the first boss.....AND WELL, that gave an idea, in IVAN you can still do damage even if you aren't using any weapons sooooo, i wonder, how far can you get in the game without any real weapons.
I tried a couple of times using the rule of "no weapons"(wands and other items were allowed) and i couldn't get pass the first boss. My best attemp was with a wand of acid rain, it was affective against the boss but the other carnivours plants survived somehow and....i got killed by then

So, as the title says, is possible to play the game that way using the right strategy?

Yeah, it IS. One of Slob's challenges was to is kill Petrus with Elpuri's Head. I think that he did it with after he SoCM it in golden eagle feather. I tried this today, found 2 stethoscopes and got with them to GC2 and then stopped trying to play without actual weapons because I found INCREDIBLE loot and I wanted to win that run. No weapons run is possible if we find out which non-weapon item is best at combat. Lantern grenades are awesome.

Maybe with a ring or wand of polymorph you could transform into something powerful, but those are hard to find on early levels

Banana peels make exceptional whip/dex trainers.

They are actually not that hard to find. Polymorphing is tricky and in most situations it will only ruin your run if you don't have polycontrol, plus it's effect is short and it can be very effective only if you use a ring of polymorph control and a ring of unchanging that prevents you from changing back in your original form. Scroll of Change Body is kind of polymorph, and it is a lot more reliable and easy to use early on.

SPOILER ALERT. Click here to see text.
If you find it then pray to Nefas until she will summon a mistress, then change into her body.

I wonder about this too. It is a good way to stop them rotting away.

If by no weapons you mean uncategorized weapons are allowed, then sure. IIRC I completed an Elpuri run wielding gauntlets years back and seem to recall a knight / high priest win by someone as well, though don't quote me on that last one.
