Or in fact simple limb damage. I read the post to mean you lost max HP - if it was CURRENT HP loss, then you probably took damage to a couple limb to the point where it became unusable (but not yet severed). This could easily happen from poison, if you took a lot of it.

I think 4zb4 is right - my limbs are all white and the strength loss on arms and legs was just 1 point each. So I guess I did lose a level from going hungry and then wandering around without a fight for too long.

Well, I never found out - a Wolf destroyed my leather armor, and then things went awry pretty fast. I lost an arm and a leg in quick succession, and in my desperation I zapped the wolf with my wand of fireballs. The resulting blast took off my remaining limbs but mercifully knocked me unconscious, too, so I did not feel any more pain while I bled to death.

It does indeed sound like leprosy. I've never had/heard vomiting, being poisoned or other effects reduce endurance. Merely wandering the world map without visible negative effects shouldn't have any adverse effects either.

Vomiting will reduce stats. I'm almost certain that includes endurance.

F*ck! Is there anything I can do to counter the effects of mustard gas? Does it ever stop? Can I tough it out with some healing bottles?

nvm, found out I can tough it out.

That was a long run...made it quite far into the GC, but then I got into some trouble at one of the lower levels. I killed off dozens of zombies and a necromancer in a large, open room, but then something I could not see started zapping me, I lost an arm and barely escaped alive. I went to Attnam, got a new arm and after that, the invisible zapping was waiting for me at GC level 1. My equipment started disappearing, and I got zapped with electric shocks all the time..I went out and rested several times, but in the end it got me.
Turns out it was a "mystical dark frog"

Argh, Mystic Dark Frogs are the most horrible things ever. Not only will they zap you, they can also teleport away all your equipment and not even a ring of teleport control can stop that. Nothing has frustrated me more than mystic dark frogs except maybe Ischaldirh (in game, not you ex-Atomic ).

If you got hit on GC1 it probably followed you up the stairs. The best way of dealing with them in my experience is to use ESP or Infravision + scroll of detect material to find where they are, teleport your way over if you can or wand of haste + run to where they are and either butcher them with melee or spam wands of striking or fireballs until they're dead. Then you can worry about finding your teleported and disenchanted equipment.
System would indicate in graphic if person is mounted on horse or not.
Same system also show if person mounted on boar, elephant, polar bear etc.
Or if person mounted on ass.
Ivan find mounting on ass funny.

scroll of detect material to find where they are,

To clarify on this in case you don't know about this trick: you can use scrolls of detect material to locate specific enemies by searching for their flesh - in this case, mystic dark frog flesh (or maybe just dark frog flesh, I'm not sure). Since they are made of their flesh, they'll light up and you can find them. Of course they'll have moved by the time you get there but it gives you a good general idea where to look...

Dark frogs aren't the only ones who can do that, but the others tend to be more attack-focused...

Thanks for those hints. I'll try and put them into practice next time around.
IF I manage to get enough resistence by the time I run into one of those frogs - this time I wouldn't have stood a chance, as one or, if I was lucky, two of those lightning strikes were enough to get one of my body parts from white to black.

He might have been affected by mustard gas, and it had started to scar certain parts of his body. Scarring can wind up abusing your health, and certain other stats.
