Water tiles
Spoiler Warning: This page contains spoilers which may affect your IVAN experience negatively
Work in progress
Water tiles are a terrain type not normally seen in dungeons, but present on the world map to represent oceans, seas or rivers.
Water is not traversable by the player by normal means (you don't know how to swim!) but can be passed through or over by a few clever means.
If a player falls into a water tile - usually by levitation wearing off - they will drown, resulting in instant death unless they have the ability to swim.
Trying to cross water on the world map while you have allies who cannot swim or fly will prompt the game to ask you whether you want to abandon them, as they cannot follow you. Allies who can fly or swim will not be abandoned, but creatures that would normally teleport across obstacles will.
Notable water locations
- The world map is covered in impassable water
- Attnam features a dolphin pool inside the cathedral, on the left side
- The flooded tunnel is a dungeon level exclusive to IVANT which features corridors between large pools of water instead of the regular solid dirt walls that make up dungeons.
- LIVAN introduces several new water features:
- Kharaz-Arad features a dungeon entrance encircled by a water moat. Water obstacles are common inside this dungeon, with the final level featuring poison water and carnivorous lily pads.
- Mondedr's dungeon also features numerous water segments.
Traversing water
There are a number of innovative ways to cross water tiles, most of which can be discovered by experimentation and taking advantage of game mechanics and items.
If you wish to learn these for yourself, do not read any further.
- Teleportation - only useful inside dungeons and extremely unreliable without telecontrol. You can bypass water simply by teleporting to the other side.
- Swimming - while the player himself does not know how to swim, numerous monsters in the game do. Considering the game features polymorphing you can simply polymorph into a monster that can swim in order to cross water
Creatures that can swim include:- Dolphins
- Frogs
- Large rats
- Priests / priestesses
- Levitation - any form of levitation will allow you to simply float over water. You can gain this in a variety of ways including:
- Using a Belt of Levitation.
- Gaining levitation via the random magical effects given by eating mushroom corpses or drinking water from fountains.
- Polymorphing into a flying creature such as a levitating ostrich, bat or giant magpie.
- Polymorphing into an ethereal monster such as a ghost or eddy in spacetime continuum.
