also, sometimes i want to drag IVAN into grimdark/horror territory. like, if you load a save which is several monthes old, you'll find the world empty. the levels (including cities) partially ruined. fountains drained. no monsters will spawn. you are the only one there, with nothing to do, nobody to talk with. and no way to die, because no wands/scrolls will work. everybody's dead. gods themselves are dead. the sun is dead, and it's always dark on the ground. congrats, you won the game by destroying literally everything.

not that i'll ever implement this, it doesn't fit. but sometimes i really want to…

This is such a cool concept.

I can also provide some fluff text for lore scrolls/books. I spend a LOT of time writing, and certain aspects of IVAN lore were stolen many years ago for my own world building (I play D&D and run my own world... has a few familiar gods, ommels, etc lol)

it is now possible to deactivate traps. currently it does the same Dex check as for activating a bear trap (for all kind of traps). failing to deactivate a bear trap hurts one of your arms, but mine and gastrap goes BOOM instead. so it's up to you to decide if it worth the risk.

also, flying over a trap doesn't prompt "you found a trap, press esc" anymore — it is useless, as the trap cannot be activated this way.

I've been waiting for this for over two decades.

and just when i thought that it's time to push new win32 build… i met zombie with legs picture for its head. cannot reproduce that, though, and i accidentally deleted the save by dying. of course, it's nice body horror, but i prefer it to be intended, not appearing from some lovecraftian dimension all by itself.

haha, makes me think of the mannequins from silent hill

Holes were mentioned elsewhere in this thread... in nethack if you have a pickaxe you can dig straight down, not just through walls like in ivan. Could drop you to the next floor doing that.

why exactly won't it run on XP?

Dunno. Older versions of the game work but not the newest. I can't remember what the error was now, it's been a while- something along the lines of it just not being a valid windows application. If you want I can boot that computer up tomorrow (or me windows 98 computer lol) and get the error message.

Note that the three dungeons (GF, FC, PY) were made with the assumption that the player will be jumping between them, not doing one at a time. Difficulty jumps between floors are BIG and you need to weigh your options where it's safest to proceed with your current equipment.

This explains why I always die in them lmao

and i realised that i need a separate "on the ship" flag. because having a ship and a belt of levitation means that the player is considered to be on the ship each time he is flying over the sea. by the way, isn't belt of levitation overpowered? maybe it should allow to travel only that far into the sea before ceasing to work? i mean, if you're too far away from any land square, the game will print something like "you are too scared to fly further", and refuse to go.
Civilization II style when you only have galley and can't go more than a square away from land you just become lost at sea haha

offtopic about my discovery of IVAN. because why not, i love offtopics.

i was immediately hooked, despite not even realising that i have to pick up the lantern. yep, i travelled the map in darkness, and i loved it. after dozen or so deaths i finally picked up the lantern, and wow! there are items lying on the ground! there is a ladder leading down! yay!

Haha, that reminds me of my first time playing pokemon... I navigated rock tunnel in the dark because it hadn't occurred to me to use "flash" even though it's spelled out in the game repeatedly.

it's really strange, i've never seen it happens. the save format is already incompatible (sigh), but would you please attach a screenshot of the game when it happens? maybe i'll be able to spot something.

I can do you one better, here's a video showing my problem: https://youtu.be/rkkacteatRM

I have cleared the level enough to know that there's nothing dangerous nearby and there's nothing on the floor and I do it in two different places. This happens on every save.

movement aborts when there is a dangerous square nearby, or some unseen item/door, or a monster. some of that could be changed in options. check if there are nothing like that around. dangerous squares incluedes vomit, broken bottles, banana peels and such.

It's happening for me across multiple new games in completely empty, isolated hallways.

I just noticed that typing G and pushing a direction only moves me one square.

hm. i just realised how badly i need playtesters. in almost two decades i NEVER (no exaggeration!) ever played as heavy weapon warrior. i mean, no, i never used two-handed swords, or halberds. the game says they are "inaccurate", and that was enough for me to ignore them completely. i was also throwing away shields the moment i found the second sword. my build is always dual-wielder, and it is usually two short swords, or gauche and short sword, or katana and… you got the idea. maximum dexterety, no heavy armors, and all that. i never even realised starting spears as a weapon.

i know that "inaccurate" doesn't mean "you will miss each time", and that big weapons are better at blocking than small ones, but… that knowledge lives in some separate part of my brain. "me grow bananas. me fear things much longer than banana."

Consider posting on the roguelike subreddit? There are a couple of us who mention IVAN at every opportunity lol.
