I usually kick chests to unlock them (if I dont have the key). I recently came across one that wouldnt open when I kicked it so i picked it up and threw it against the wall. Voila!

then in the last game i played, first 3 steps into the dungeon I find sal thuul. nice. one of my favorite weapons in the game. i com across a chest 3 steps later and for some reason i decided to pick it up and throw it against the wall instead of kicking it. you hear something shatter. you are covered in sulphuric acid (and of course 2 turns later) you die. I have not seen that happen when i kick chests , have i just been lucky, or is throwing chest more dangerous?

unrelated point, i love when i find one of the hidden chests, and when i finally get it open one of the goodies inside is another chest, its like finding double the treasure.

if your Astr is better than you LStr then throwing works better than kicking. This is usually the case for me and I usually open the meteoric steel chests in the secret rooms in GC by throwing them at the wall.

That is true Slob, but you forgot to mention that breaking locks against walls increases the chance of the items inside breaking, especially bottles, as Batman? found out the hard way. Kicking the chest around (NOT against a wall) has a chance to break the lock with less of a chance of item breakage. Throwing a chest around does nothing.

yeah but the meteoric steel chests rarely have bottles in them. All I really care about is gettin wands of cloning/mirroring and those don;t usually break. I can;t say I've noticed that kicking has less chance of breaking items. is this in the code?

Something I've noticed about kicking, this one time in the UT, I was having trouble breaking the lock on a large chest. I'd kicked it 20 times or so, then gave up. I took off my troll hide boots and tried kicking again, and after only 2-3 kicks the lock breaks. Were the boots making my kicks weaker?

I don't know about the code, but that's my experience.

I just realized what happened. I kicked a chest which was already up against a wall in my current game and heard a shatter, then when i look at the chest, i see it is sitting in a pile of troll blood. when items spill from a chest the spill onto the same square as the chest. When i threw the chest is was right next to the wall, hence the chest landed on the same square as I was standing on and that why i was covered in the acid. So i would recommend if you are throwing a chest, for the sake of safety try to be at least one square away from a wall when doing it (if your strong enough!)

spilling acid on you shouldn;t kill you unless you a very weak. One ring of acid resistance is more than enough.
