Angels and Enner Beast

Hey everybody, long time no visit. I felt in an IVAN mood today, so I started up a new character, for the first time in a few months.

After an hour or so of playing, I stumbled upon 2 wands of polymorph, and started polymorphing stacks of fir in GC 1. Luckily enough, the room I started mining to bits was an alter to Loricatus, the god I always try my hardest to become champion of.

After a few scrolls of charging and sacrificing all the useless metal objects I got from the polymorphing, I became Loricatus' champion, and he gave me an angel. Now, 2 things were weird from here on;

Firstly, no matter how long I waited and how much I offered him, he was always displeased with me upon praying. Maybe I'm forgetting how something works, but it struck me as odd.

Secondly, when I went to fight the enner beast, who was right down the hall from the staircase, I cloned my angel. They both approached the beast... But refused to strike him. I checked the logs after my eventual death, and neither angel took a swing at him once, and I couldn't zap him without hitting the angels and getting royally screwed. Is this a known thing to happen?

You may have accidentally prayed to him too soon once, and pissed him off that way. Anger is really hard to get rid of, and it's separate from piety. Pretty much there's nothing to do but wait a really long time (probably multiple game-days) before praying to him again. I don't even know if that will work. But just sacrificing stuff won't do it.

Ah, I didn't know there was an Anger meter, I thought it just reduced piety and reset the time until you could pray normally again.

Nosir. And praying while they are angry will make them even MORE angry. So if you accidentally piss off your god you're probably better off just not praying to them for... well probably the rest of the game.

Actually it's not that extreme. My research reveals that your standard prayer which you do every 3 hours has a timer of 5000, while a bad pray is double that. However a bad pray while they're pissed is 50,000. Getting the champion gift from Valpurus or Mortifer will set it to 100,000.

In short, the lessons of this topic:

Normal prayer: 3 hour wait
Bad prayer: 6 hour wait
Bad prayer to already angry god: 30 hour wait
Championship prayer to Val/Morty: 50 hour wait

I would guess that's a result of the whole pissed-off god thing, since, you know, the angels aren't exactly independent of their god's wishes.

I doubt it. Personally I reckon Enner's screams messed up their arms so they couldn't attack.

Wouldn't they kick or bite if that were the case? Though I guess they might have gone into a panic, but then why stay near the enner at all?

Maybe their heads were damaged and they were confused?

Off topic: Having 2 small children and owning you own business does not help you find time to play IVAN at all. I was convinced that a new versions of IVAN, ADOM and Nethack were all going to be released the day my twins were born, just to taunt me.

Angels don't have legs.

Yeah so... damaged heads then? "How are you going to bite if you don't have a useable head?"

I have wizmoded a fight between myself minus arms and legs but with extremely high health + one golden eagle shirt and Petrus, and thus determined that no, being confused is *not* a bar from attempting to bite your foes to death, assuming you are either not panicked or cornered. However, the chances of actually biting your foes are very low if you are untrained in such a skill, and given some level of protection could probably end up looking like an impossible feat.

This does not address the stated event of the angels staying near instead of panicking yet not trying to fight the enner at all, rather than just missing. Again, I'm going to guess that it could be due to god anger translating to less helpful pets, but testing that seems like more of a hassle than it's worth at the moment to me (unless there is a savegame on hand that shows this behavior by chance). Probably not that difficult to really test out in wizmode though; all you have to do is get a god to summon angels in a dungeon, piss the god off a bunch and see if the angels kill things.
