Not sure if this is a bug. But if Valpurus is pleased with you, you can get new limb due praying.
Wiki says, that he won't do this.

Indeed. It's very unusual for a weak hero to get a couple of hundred arm strength points early in the game.

I honestly don't know how I ever did artifical limb wins. Whenever I try them now I can't handle the danger level anymore

It requires luck and only doing the limbs once you have a good survival kit already assembled.

It's really fun, slaughtering through most enemies easily, but yeah, the other half of the time I have to keep running from some unique of übermonster.
