Names! Which do you give your characters?

I go through categories of naming. I use a lot of characters from books, movies, and TV, but I also use the names of people I know. The one named after best friend, for example, was pathetic and Kenny killed her, but the one named after her father got pretty far.

Right now, though, to prove to myself how many games I play regularly, I've been playing with characters named after letters of the alphabet. G has been my best character yet. I started this last night and I'm already on T...

How do you name your characters? Do you allow repeat names? All the same name?

I'm very bad at naming anything, last time I used a big list of colors where I picked the names

I ran out of colors, though.

I name all of my characters either Scamp or Jerry (they are the names of 2 of my ferrets)

sometimes I mix up the spellings if I'm feeling particularly wacky.

I select a name and play it until I get a relatively far, GC3 or so. I don't have any theme for the names, I improvise them.

I usually name a character after what I plan to do with it.

For example, if I'm playing a challenge kind of game, I may name something similar to the type of challenge. (Example: When doing my LightBringer challenge (wield two lanterns as weapons) I'll name myself something like Edison, Glowrod, etc. If I'm doing a Metal Gear Solid esque challenge (leave no corpse out in the open, put them in rooms and close the doors. Leave nothing behind that could show you were ever there. There are so many ways this can kill you) I'll probably name myself Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, Gaseous Snake, Plasma Snake, you get the idea.

Id I'm just playing for fun, it's Vault Dweller and his faithful pooch Dogmeat, all the way.

Campbell: Snake, push the action button. Snake: ... What!?

Generally I take the boring way out and just keep the same name for all my games. If I ever win I might try challenges, but thus far the best I've done is reach the enner beast twice.

Welcome Paul. I like the idea of advancing through the alphabet. I usually go with names of friends (Casella, Genovesi, etc), pets (Parangi, Herman), characters (Gandalf, Frodo, etc), or famous people (Gershwin, Ettore (Bugatti)).

I usually use original (i.e. not taken from somewhere, like Frodo) names with a fantasy feeling. For inspiration I use objects that are lying near my computer, recent events, etc. For example, if there are sunglasses near, I could call a human character Sunglar. I sometimes use a series of names which are similar, except the first letter which advances alphabetically. E.g. Anglar, Bunglar, Cunglar, ...
