It's an IVAN competition! Survive the last level of UT as long as possible without killing the mother plant.

Challenge 1:
As soon as you enter UT3 take note of the date. Then just try to stay alive as long as possible. As soon as you die the challenge is over. Take note of the date you died and subtract your first date from it. Then post that here. Remember to keep track of the date and not the turn! Survive as long as you can!

Challenge 2:
If you want you can also add up all of your carnivorous plant kills at the end of the game and submit that. Even plants killed outside of UT3 will count towards your score. Plants killed by pets count too! Kill as many as you can!

These are the rules
-Use unmodded version .50
-Using a wand of doors or breaking one while in the level is forfeit
-killing the mother plant is forfeit
-leaving the level before the challenge ends is forfeit
-no flying to Attnam before you start the challenge to grind your character
-no wizard mode(duh)
-if you encounter a bones level at any point you can not enter the challenge
-you may not choose to polymorph into a ghost, bills will, or eddy in UT3.

Who can last the longest? If you want to show off you can post pictures but it's not required.

--Scores--

Survivors:
Cowofdoom78963: 18 hours 3 minutes

I second that question!

Also, what about bones? If I find a ghost, should I start start over? (I propose that we should)

My last character would've been perfect for this. Mithril chain mail, favored by Mellis (tons of healing liquid) while still in UT. In GC3 Rondol hit me in the head and knocked me unconscious; I was still alive when I woke back up (and should've easily been able to beat him) but the next hit killed me after I pulled my wand of teleportation out of its chest

I'll give this another shot but here's my first attempt

Turn:
1316 - Entered UT3
1340 - found an oil lamp and wished for Mjolak
2320 - first giant plant
2751 - killed
1435 turns total

Arm Strength went from 13 to 20 in that time because of Mjolak

Killed:
38 plants
46 greater plants
12 giant plants
96 total

Final score: 1427

I had 2 cans of troll blood but couldn't drink quick enough. The main reason I died though was weak body armor (hardened leather I think)

I also had a couple scrolls of teleportation and some offensive wands. My plan if I became desperate was, I had both a ring of polymorph and polycontrol, so I'd turn into something else. Never got the chance to use any of those though, so I could've easily lasted longer. Also, never returned to UT to rest. Starvation seems very likely if you do this for too long... those kiwis aren't enough to keep you going after a while.

Nope. Leaving the level for any reason is forfeit, you can prepare as much as you like before you enter though.

Hmm, this one's tough. Bones could be allowed but one could be travling back to new attnam after already beating UT and die.
So Im not going to allow bones. I would recommend that you make a file that has no bones in it so that you dont waste your bones on the competion.

I like the idea of having a seperate score for plant kills and time survived. Good idea capristo. I dont think I will count final score though becuase that might also count for what happens outside the level(you might also kill some plants outside UT3, but it's not nearly enough to count for much anyway)

P.S. I'm sure the polycontrol thing would've been illegitimate, just thought it'd be a funny way to circumvent the rules

Didn't think of that. Don't know if I should make that against the rules or not. You would be pretty lucky to get both that early in the game.

Also turns are a lot easier to count than the date, so were using that now(I forgot the game even kept track of turns!)

EDIT:Actually the poly control thing brings up a good point. Someone could turn into a ghost, bills will, or eddy and just wait in the wall forever. I have to make sure that's not allowed. Im trying to be sorta light on the rules though, I don't want to become one of those final destination guys.

Well, here goes nothing! *Leaves to take on the plants*

I'm back. And here's how I did:

Arrived at turn 784. Died at 2193. (1409 turns)
Killed 55 plants.
Finally done in by a giant carnivorous plant that showed up seconds after the second one fell
Note most of my equipment is broken, and I was wearing a torn armor of great health.
I got a marble arm from Dulcis, which was damn helpful
System would indicate in graphic if person is mounted on horse or not.
Same system also show if person mounted on boar, elephant, polar bear etc.
Or if person mounted on ass.

Alright. Im gonna try.

So I started out pretty well. I found a book of avitus and some good gear for plant killing. After a while I found another and after some reading got the anacadite plate mail. I decided to take a risk and go to silvas level. I managed to avoid the golem and get a +3 steel spear and some other goodies. I gathered up some corpses and some other things that might seem useful.

At turn 1538 I entered the plant level.

kicked a door and lost some potions to an explosion, but I survived so it was ok.
I found some gauntlets of strength giving me total protection
at 4775 i was still alive, a plant got a lucky hit on my leg and nearly crippled me but I got out just barely. so far so good!
I am at the point that I am overfed on kiwis, foods not much of a problem anymore.
5594, NEARLY BITTEN TO BITS BY PLANTS. All of my limbs turned black, but sophos saved me at the last second. I went to hide but shortly after I was attacked by plants yet again.
5598, I tried to escape by zapping a wand of lightning but it bounced and killed me. What a stupid way to die. But I still did pretty ok.

final score: 4060 turns
final kills:
45 small plants
94 medium plants
111 large plants
250 plants total.

Good luck beating that!

Well just did another run, it went a lot better than my previous one, but nowhere near as good as cowofdoom's!

Entered UT3 at turn 1788. Died at 3296. (1508 turns total)
Killed: 32 carnivorous plants, 61 Greater carnivorous plants, 27 Giant carnivorous plants. (120 plants total)
Inventory: Iron boots, Iron Gauntlets, Meteoric steel chainmail +1 (shit yes), Hardened leather helmet, Ommel hair belt, Iron mace +1, Copper axe, ommel hair cloak.
Special notes: Caught leprosy, but this worked to my advantage since I knew both Legifer and Sophos. When a limb dropped off I prayed and either got a glass or hardened leather limb in return , However this lead to my downfall - a giant carnivorous plant critically injured both arms (which were glass and leather respectively) so I couldn't attack and I couldn't get them lopped off easily. One finally got bitten off when I was on striped red damage on my groin and torso, so I quickly prayed, got a glass arm and equipped my axe and swiftly cut the plant down. Sadly, when I was resting afterwards I had gotten to light-red on my torso when another giant carnivorous plant appeared and promptly shredded my useful arm to bits. I died exchanging bites with it :]

Hmm. The main problem with pets is that if they get to the mother plant and kill her then you cant submit your score, otherwise their fine. If you want to take that risk go right ahead and bring a pet.

Just be sure to check that when you die nobody has killed the mother plant.

Ack. That could have gone much better. I forgot to note when I entered UT3 as well. However, here's my first attempt.

52 carnivorous plants
72 greater carnivorous plants
23 giant carnivorous plants

Total: 147

Noteworthy stuff:
4 cans of healing fluid
2 bottles of troll blood
Wand of teleport
Bronze short sword +1
Iron short sword
Iron chainmail
Troll hide cloak of fire resistance
Gauntlets of Dexterity +2

Oh yeah, almost caught leprosy on UT2. Ran away and later found out the zombie spoiled away
Also, backpack. I planned to go out with a bang should I find myself surrounded and near death, but I was fighting a pair of giant carnivorous plants, I killed one, then the other one got a lucky shot on me, ending my killing spree.

Also, I don't think you should judge survivor category by turns. Healing over 15 minutes counts as a single turn, as does searching in 5 seconds.

Crap, you got a point...

Subtracting the dates a bit more of a bother but oh well. It would probably be more authentic looking anyway. Besides, now you all have a chance to get a score higher then mine.

Hmm I think Chao's right. Instead we should note the time, displayed below your gold and the dungeon level.
...Which is unfortunate, seeing as i've just started another person and have noted the turn at which he entered.

EDIT: Then again, holding down "s" or "." doesn't warn you when a plant appears, so you may accidentally hold it down too long after the plant shows up and get killed. Oh, and just tapping "." until a plant sprouts is a long, boring process.
Also note that by holding "." down I'm currently soundly beating my record of turns...

EDIT2: Newest results.

The character "Duke Nukem" set out to whip plants and drink valdemar. And he was all out of valdemar. (this is 0.50 after all, if this was CVS, this wouldn't have been the case =P)
Entered UT3 at turn 1691, died at 3654. - (1963 turns in total)
Killed: 53 carnivorous plants, 29 greater carnivorous plants, 2 giant carnivorous plants (81 in total - no new record)
Cause of death: Killed by a Orange-Brown giant carnivorous plant (it panicked my guy)
Inventory: Chameleon whip, Ommel hair whip +2, Troll hide armor, broken belt of carrying, adamant helmet (found broken, repair scroll'd), boots of strength +2, troll hide cloak of electricity resistance, ring of electricity resistance, bronze pickaxe, 2 wands of teleport, wand of striking, wand of polymorph.

tapping "." being boring is the main reason that Im deciding to change it, Im not too worried if people decide to use it to boost their score, becuase anyone can do it.

Overall using the date is more accurate and looks better, so Im switching to that.
You guys don't mind if I just delete our old scores right?

Also Im considering adding more challenges in the future. If you guys have any ideas for interesting challenges just tell me.

How about you leave the previous scores, and make a new section for time?
E.G.
Survivors - Turn based:
cowofdoom78963
4zb4
capristo

&

Survivors - Time based:
EG
IE
ETC

Also in terms of challenges, seeing how long someone can last in the enner level without killing him... heh heh.
And also surviving in UT6. Same style as the plant one - don't kill the necromancers, add up zombie and skeleton kills, measure time etc. Added bonus: Don't let the veteran kamikaze dwarf die/get killed.

Also I just came up with a great idea for a challenge. I'm off to make a thread.

I like the way you think, 4zb4! =D Though, getting that far won't be easy... How about someone shares a save from just before Enner/CG6, which must be used?

I can keep your old score but I dont want to make an official challenge for turn based runs. It seems kind of pointless when time is so much more accurate.

The problem with those would be that if someone gets that far in the game then they would probably be more interested in completing it then throwing it all away for a challenge.

Heh, although surviving the enner and UT6 is somewhat of a feat, that by no means will ensure your survival to the end of the game
