I had my first good character going in a long time (the one with the wished up HoB), and I stepped on a landmine 30 seconds after entering GC1. It seems unfair (I know I know , the game is cruel). Is there something I could have done to avoid the landmine?

Also on an unrelated note there is a great in borwser flash game that came out called monsters den. you can find it on a lot of flash sites, Ive been playing it on onemorelevel.com . it is simple and kind of limited, but I have been playing it like it was make of crackrock for the last 2 days.

Ways to avoid mines:

The ring of searching is pretty good for detecting mines and other traps.

The belt of levitation is the best, because you can avoid not only the traps, but dissolving liquids too.

You should have a cloak/ring of fire resistance to protect you from explosions.

Silva's earthquakes usually trigger all the mines on a level.

If you dont have any of these equipment, use the "s" key to "s"earch for traps. It doesn't always work the first time, so press it multiple times before taking a step.
Oh, and put your wands/scrolls/bottles into a chest to protect them from explosions (but always keep a wand of teleporting ready for use).

Two best ways are an enchanted cloak of fire resistance (recommended) or if you lack that a prayer to Silva. Only problem with praying to Silva is that most liquids on the level will be lost (the bottles shatter).
Wait, let me get this straight... you hit the button? OH SHI-

Ehh... Oops. =) Sorry. You two look similar. Yes, I should've noticed that Bored one's in Finland. Terveeks.

To keep it from complete offtopic, I haven't ever had belt of levitation, so I always go with enchanted CoFR. A good one protects you completely, and you might not take any damage at all... But still be careful, the dwarven minefield blowing at your face will still kill you. Single mines won't even scratch.

nothing beats belt of levitation and it is easy to get. the only other enchanted belt is belt of carrying (which is pretty useless) so why the hell would anyone not get a belt of levitation.

In general, I try my best to obtain fire resistance by buying up any available ring or cloak of it in the shop. (I'll even wish for it if I must!) If I cannot manage that, then I try for searching and still search once myself for each step I take. (Paranoia can save lives! ) As a last resort of survival, I'll use up a detect material scroll for every floor I can and detect "iron" since all mines in the standard IVAN game are made of iron. (It will just show you a bunch of blank spaces, but that is because those are hidden mines. Also if you explore near them you may forget again where they are, so I suggest stepping next to them, please be careful, and using "s"earching until you flag them.) If I have nothing and I find myself stepping into the Gloomy Cave, I will search at least two times for each step (Extra paranoia! ) and only stop searching if I am sure I am traveling where either I or another, non-levitating monster, have traveled before.

Regardless, I consider myself doomed if I do not have fire resistance when I set foot in the Gloomy Cave, but I have had characters survive doing these more extreme measures.

I don't bother with fire resistance anymore. Belt of levitation is all you need to avoid mines. Dwarves are easy to kill from a distance or via hit and run once AGI is high enough. All you need is major electricity resistance to survive the the dark mages (elder dark mages are deadly), their electricity is deadlier than their explosions.
