The last update in the official IVAN CVS is from 2006/09/22. I don't think it was officially named 0.60, I just call it CVS for a lack of better name. IVAN 3D is based on it, and only adds interface options, so balance and gameplay is the same except that valdemar abundance is fixed. I don't have any links, but if somebody does not want IVAN 3D then I can recompile it.
edit: Oh, you meant continuing IVAN development unofficially? I thought you meant the CVS version, which was called 0.60 by lampshade, I think.

Umm.. whichever one's being discussed in that topic. I think that would be continuing IVAN development unofficially

That thing was my attempt to continue developing IVAN with these people, but no-one was willing or had the skill to work with C++ so it was eventually forgotten... We'll see, maybe I find time to start learning programming after I get out... I wonder. IVAN deserves to be brought forward and we already have plenty of materials.

I've tried to look into the code but I've never managed to make it compile. Is there a trick to it or what?

I got it once. IIRC there was a guide on the official forum.
