You can use vmware with windows installed. If you have software like crossoveroffice you could give it a shot too.

And you could try to get the sources and compile them on youre mac. It could work since ivan compiles & runs really weall on linux which isnt much diffrent from the macos.

Hello, my name is Shard. I am new to these forums, and I've seen the previous forum, and Lenox's post about compiling it for mac. I want to know if anyone can give me the game already compiled for mac.

For running the game on MacOSX it seems there's a promising solution that I'm starting to use:
DOSBox which is a DOS emulator with versions on OSX + DOS IVAN 0.50

At this point it is working like a charm but I haven't yet played a lot and had few trouble to find where are the keys to use on the keyboard.

I don't use DOSBox directly but through DBGL (DosBOX Game Launcher), a DOSBox frontend. It has also a nice OSX package easy to install and it includes DOSBox.

For mention the setup I'm using through DBGL:

DosBOX Game Launcher 0.60 and it includes DOSBox 0.72
Display :
- output : opengl
- frameskip : 0 (try 1 or more if you feel something slow)
- scaler : advinterp2x (not all scalers works perfectly for all games, but it worth try a few to eventually get a better look)
- fullscreen : off (on is working nicely but I prefer window mode)
- Double buffering : on
- Window resolution : original
- Aspect correction : off

Machine :
- machine : vga
- core : auto
- cycles : max

Memory :
- size : 63
- XMS : on
- EMS : on
- UMB : true
- Loadfix : off

Audio :
I don't have any audio in the game but that's how I like it.

I/O :
Keyboard : I have a mapper file and a layout the usually is working ok for my need but with a rogue like using much more keys, perhaps I should search something else. I can't provide a general solution, see DOSBox forums/doc for help about this.

Mouting :
Read the DBGL help for this.

I hope this will help. For any trouble DOSBox forums are great, and read the doc and the FAQ helps solve many solutions.

EDIT: I also got a strange problem with DOS IVAN 0.5, the first time I got it there was no clear Ivan file to run, it seems the uncompress had once some problem. I tried a second time and this time got all files nice including a good IVAN exe file.

I'd like to point a problem for OSX, the zip archive provided in the original IVAN site aren't unzip well by the default tool with older OSX (a version of unstuffit). With this tool Exe files are broken with the ivan archives.

One solution is perhaps to update this tool yourself or download another tool to do the job. Another solution is to use OSX 10.5.x because it includes its own archive tool.

If you are using OSX 10.5.x you could have some problem anyway because you have an installed unstuffit version not working well with ivan archives and when you double click or unzip from your internet browser it's this tool that will be used.

To avoid this problem under OSX 10.5.x take care to select the zip file in the finder then with the context menu (right click) select the system archive tool to unzip ivan zip files without to broke exe files.

You say you don't have any audio in the game, the game doesn't come with audio anyway.

Hi guys, this is my first post about IVAN in like 5 years, but yes, I'm the same lenox who originally began porting IVAN to Mac. I wanted to reiterate what someone earlier in the thread suggested, that using DosBox with the DOS version of IVAN 0.50 works pretty well. It's not as smooth as the Mac SDL port, but at least it works. Also, the latest versions of Boxer (a Mac DosBox frontend) are AMAZING in general.

That said, the main problem getting IVAN to work on Mac was the difference in PowerPC and x86 architecture. Now that Macs are x86, it is a moot point. The game was in a playable state but would crash in certain areas because of the architecture differences. So, something tells me I could get IVAN compiled without too much fuss on Intel Macs if there was enough interest. The only problem I foresee are GCC 4 and 64-bit but they can be worked around.

Does anyone still care enough to have a native Mac OS (Intel-only) version?

Welcome back Lenox! You don't know me, but I've been around for a long time now. To answer your question, yes! Over the years we've had many people asking about IVAN for mac, and though it's not really development, any activity is good activity.
