Magpies have a dubious reputation for stealing various things, and this is reflected in IVAN. Giant magpies are their representatives in IVAN; they are greedy birds that can be found almost everywhereanywhere.

They will steal one of your items (usually a ring or a wand) on contact, and then fly away. They are fast, so its easy to lose sight of them. The item they steal is usually one that shines, such as a ring, wand, valuable stone, and some metallic/gemstone gear (such as those made from mithril or ruby).

However, they are weak and easy to kill when cornered. Also note that the Giant Magpies cannot open doors. If you corner it against a door, it won't be able to escape. If you chase it into a room and close the door, the same applies. That is, of course, until another creature opens the door. Magpie flesh is edible.
