I have a good (I think) character going. I have a meteoric steel chain shirt, helm of brilliance, boots of strength, and a belt. I am currently wielding a iron 2 handed schimitar to train Astr, which is currently at 14. I can switch to a steel spear and copper shield if I have too.
My question is should I keep running around on UT 1 and 2 training stats, or should I try to take on the big plant? I have a wand of tele, so I could just zap her and run. I would like to at least make it to attnam before I die.
Also I found an alter to Atavus and have been saccing to him. I didnt see any info on him in the wiki, does he have anything good going for him?

Atavus will give you an arcanite chain mail (very light and strong), but only if you become his champion, which probably won't happen
As far as weapons, the scimitar and spear are in 2 different categories, so even if you have high strength, you will not be able to use your spear well. Spears and halberds are both in the pole-arms category though, so I would suggest using a halberd to train strength next time, since you are at the same time training your skill with spears.
What's your Endurance at right now? It really depends on the character but in general I would say, try to beat Genetrix. If she gets you dark red, then run and teleport any plants that get in your way. Then go back to UT2, rest, come back and try to get her again. If she makes you dark red again then it's best to just teleport her away and go to Attnam, or, go back to UT1 and UT2 and find some more monsters to train with.

Got it, so I should train astr with the halberd I have so that when i switch to spear/shield I am double training my skills?
Is spear a good weapon class to use, or should I go for swords?

I dont get this Champion thing. When does this Atavus call me a Champion? I 've read that you can become a champion of Mortifer and the other main god too : D I've got the arcanite plate mail couple of times but i cant recall atavus calling me a champion.

Sometimes when you offer stuff to a god they will say something different. That lets you know you're a champion. It's usually "So and So greets you as a champion of the cause!"
Atavus is actually really easy to get to champion. Just pray to him every now and then, and offer him treasure chests.
Also, if you get to the point where you can't beat Genetrix, just tele her out of the way and go up the stairs. It's kind of a waste to use the wand on normal plants. Or just do what I do and fight her until she hits you, go back and heal, repeat. If you have any kind of decent weapon (hell iron daggers work) you should easily take her down.

You do not need to be a champion to get Atavus' reward. You only need to be (IIRC) halfway there. Basically, just keep praying to him (at regular intervals, of course; don't piss him off) and sooner or later he'll drop an arcanite plate at your feet.

I'm pretty sure you have to become atavus champion to get the arcanite plate mail. It's not hard, just pray regularly to Seges, dulcis, legifer, atavus,, make offers to these same gods(+valpurus) and read their books(+valpurus). I used to do it every game but now i don't always bother.

I'm about 90% certain you do not. It's a chance thing. You need at least 500 (out of 1000) favor, and the chances of getting it with each prayer increases with your favor. So a champion will be far more likely to get it than a 500-favor person, but there is a slim chance the 500 person will get it too.

No... Well I have, but not the god code. I recall Ighalli (or was it one of the devs?) saying the above at some point. Or was it in the first Wiki? I can't recall.

I beat The Mother Plant easily.
Of course, I broke a wand of polymorph and became a purple quartz golem, but regardless I still beat her down.
