How exactly do I sacrafice stuff to the gods?

Already beaten the game once via the knight ending...but I'd really like to get into the favor of a few certain Almighty Beings this time around.
What EXACTLY do you do to sacrifice an item? All I can figure out is that you must stand on an altar...

Press shift+o and select the item you want to offer.
