Bananas leave peels when eaten. Bananas can also be broken, though this doesn't affect their edibility. A special variant of the banana is the Golden Banana, which is only worth more, and nothing else. There is also The Holy Banana of Oily Orpiv.
Zapping
Banana's can be 'z'apped, producing little more than a message reading "BANG!". Bananas always have 6 charges, however, each time you zap a banana it is put at risk of being jammed, which will prevent further zappings.
Broken bananas cannot be zapped.
Peels
Banana peels are the leftovers of eaten bananas, and can hurt you when you slip on one. Hedgehogs and spiders, sometimes even kobolds, die from this happening to them.
