spoiler There are two types of Necromancers, apprentices and masters. Apprentices can summon zombies from corpses (Only humans, no animal zombies in the current versions) and masters can summon zombies and skeletons, including a one-time summon of Xinroch. Necomancers in groups are a problem if there is more than one, since they will teleport, summon the dead, and launch lightning spells like the ones that dark mages launch.
If you encounter a lot of undead and/or the ones that you kill come back to life, it's a tip that there is a necromancer on the level.
As with most hostiles, necromancers (both apprentice and master) can be tamed. They will retain their spellcasting abilities like tamed wizards and happily set about raising the dead. All zombies raised by a tamed necromancer will automatically be friendly to you.

So, you ask, how can I be a necromancer?
To be a necromancer you must use a wand of necromancy to summon zombies from corpses. Note that each time you zap such a wand, you will slightly become more aligned with the chaotic gods. There are two main requirements to reanimate a dead creature: it must be a thinking being with a soul and it must leave behind a body. Golems, bears, and angels are examples of creatures that cannot be reanimated.
