There are several kinds of books in the game. You may be looking for:

-Books of *god* are books, that open a channel from PC to the god the book is about by teaching you the magical rites concerning that god. After you've read the book, you can [[pray]] to the god. Effect is similar as to walking to an [[altar]]. Books come in three different colours; yellow for [[lawful]], blue for [[neutral]] and red for [[chaotic]]. Each time you read a book, your alignment shifts towards the faction of the book. Reading books and [[scrolls]] also increases your [[Character stats|wisdom]] and [[Character stats|intelligence]]. It might also make the god a bit friendlier towards you, though the effect is not as radical as offerings have. After you've read the book enough, it disappears.
