Rune sword is a magical large sword that starts very weak, but has no limit on the amount of enchanting it can receive - whereas for normal weapons enchanting is guaranteed to succeed up to +5 and beyond that it becomes less and less likely to work the higher the enchantment should become, rune swords can always be successfully enchanted.
For example, if you can find 20 scrolls of enchant weapon, you can enchant it up to +20, eventually giving it unrivaled power. Therefore, a rune sword is a very good end-game weapon, but one that requires planning and preparation to make good use of.
