Hmm.. I think your agility and dexterity would have to be insanely high though, to be able to hit her and zap her away before she can hit back. Yes, pressing 's' will let me make the first move, but on her retaliation I usually end up with every limb & head severed off.
The invisible floating eye thing is really neat! It seems that floating eyes are one of the most commonly generated creatures once you get to a certain point, probably to screw over careless, over-confident people. I usually carry a few whips to throw at them but this seems like a nice alternative since I usually have a surplus of invisibility wands

How much do shields help? I've never used a shield, usually double-wield weapons. Any #s on how much more effective a shield is at blocking?

Well, if I ever did come across his Bones, there's no way I'd be powerful enough that early in the game to kill his ghost.

Noooooo!!! The same character was up to 35 Dex without any training, had dual whips of thievery +12, still had 2 scrolls of charging and a wand of cloning with 3 charges. Was kicking ass but only had 54 HP and died instantly from a hattifattener's lightning bolt 
And he's in UT2, there's no way I'll ever come across his bones.

Wow. TWO scrolls of charging, 1 SOCM, 1 wand of mirroring, 1 thunder hammer, a horn of bravery, and a dragon hide cloak of fire resistance. All in UT 2.
And a meteoric steel chain mail, boots of agility, gauntlets of strength (neither pair was broken), and a pre-enchanted nymph hair whip +2
To top it all off, in UT3 I ran into a Bones file. Not the best items, but there was another scroll of charging.

I buy from the library because I want to save the scrolls for when they'll really be useful, and by that point I have more gold than I know what to do with.

Maybe something else killed the eddy? Although UT seems too early for eddies to appear, unless you were returning after going to GC
