No, bone files are not kept in the save folder.
I may hazard a guess that you had a broken wizard mode file, perhaps.

Neat-o, but I think there should be some way to delete old avatars in some specific cases like an improvement on an old one, making it obsolete.

I got a mistress after exploring about a quarter of UT1. She had an iron spear +2 (or something to that effect) and the only thing of worth that I had found was a wand of haste, no armor or weapons. I would have ran away but she kind of bumped into me while I was taking a nap in a room and she killed me right quick.
Not necessarily my most horrible, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
