And yes, I'm fighting hedgehogs - but aren't the banana peels supposed to work as whips and I won't take arm damage from attacking them?

Yes, but the point is that hedgehogs are small which makes them hard to hit since you're using banana peels instead of an actual whip which would usually be extremely accurate. Also they've got quite a large reputation for ending adventures early around these parts.

This reminds me that I still have a half-baked "Cheating Bastard's Guide to LIVAN" lying around somewhere.

Are you fighting hedgehogs by any chance? Kobolds should be easy enough. Carnivorous plants are good too.

The banana peel problem is probably due to being generated a bad character. Plus it's rather hard to stay alive whilst doing so anyway.

Ring of polymorph, eat mutant corpses, get zapped by a god etc...

Cap's right. You could however make a sub-category of potion and make it so the only liquid it has is sulphuric acid and then wish for it. You could also do that for milk.

e.g.
  Config POTION_CARTON;
  {
    SecondaryMaterialConfig == MILK;
    Possibility = 10;
    NameSingular = "milk carton";
  }

I believe halberds do too. You could probably mess with the script files to get it to work.

Hmm i'm not sure it's much use changing it. Besides, once your skill or Astr gets high enough (can't remember which) your player starts holding some weapons vertically.

I vaguely remember something of this nature being discussed here before... try digging through the "Anything relating to IVAN you're too lazy to make a thread for" topic.

Giant shrooms give you magic effects when you eat them too. Seemingly random, although I seem to get levitation or "jumpy" quite a lot.
