His plight seems really familiar to me, like it rang a bell but I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it is just the old trope of
he who cannot die, or perhaps an actual reference?
Alternatively, might be a jab at the whole old warrior who cannot die until he is defeated, but is too strong for all who oppose him thing.
