A ghost is a disembodied soul of a dead adventurer who'd been controlled by a poorly skilled player, most likely.

Of course they are unhappy, angry with the former player, and doomed to go to the hell and want to find companions, which is not really a nicest thing.

Since they do not have their own body any longer, they are floating and are able to pass through walls, although somehow they are clearly visible. Ghosts levitate.

Finding the ghost of a previous player in the dungeon usually indicated the presence of a player corpse on the level - in this way you can recover items you had on the previous profile. Physical alternations to the dungeon made by that player may also be visible.
