Guards are particularly strong humans found primarily in towns, but also in certain dungeon areas. As their name would suggest, they guard locations against threats and will spring into action the moment an enemy disturbs the peace.
Despite their appearance, most regular guards are not entirely clad in armor - just a plate mail and full helmet - which leaves their limbs vulnerable. They also are unable to read, despite possessing average intelligence.
All guards are [[alcoholic]]s and will accept gifts of [[bottle]]s of [[vodka]] from the player which they will promptly drink without a second thought.

Rookie guards are only found in [[New Attnam]] where they watch over [[Richel Decos]]' mansion and by extension the rest of the island. They have 20% lower stats than a veteran guard, but are still strong enough to wreck any newbie with ease.<br>
It is strongly recommended the player come back to New Attnam at a later point in the game if they wish to challenge Decos and his guards.

Veteran guards are the most common type of guard in the game and are primarily found guarding almost everything in [[Attnam]].

The eunuch guard is a unique guard assigned to the protection of [[Petrus]]' wives. He is no different from a veteran guard except his equipment is all made of steel instead of iron. He also has unique dialog.

The patrol guard is also a unique guard found in Attnam. His job is to patrol around the border of the town rather than keep watch at a post. Unlike regular guards he is equipped with a helmet of piercing perception to increase his PER, and a ring of infravision to allow him to spot warmblooded invisible threats. He is otherwise identical to a veteran guard but has unique dialog lines.<br>
Although the patrol guard will accept alcohol from the player, he will not stop to drink it as he is coded to ceaselessly patrol the border. This patrolling behavior makes him susceptible to banana peels or acid spills left in his path.

Shop guards protect the shop in gloomy caves. Unlike regular guards they do not attack monsters on sight, due to an agreement the shop owner has with the cave's inhabitants.<br>
Shop guards are slightly tougher than veteran guards and wield steel equipment and rings of invisibility to spot invisible players trying to shoplift.

Elite guards are the best equipped and toughest regular guards in the game. They are far less numerous than veteran guards, and are assigned to protecting Petrus, his dolphins, and the treasury of Attnam.<br>
They are clad in mithril equipment and have a ring of infravision for spotting invisible players, and a ring of invisibility.
