If Mellis likes you, he can teach you about other gods you don't know yet, or improove your relations to them, or (most often, and possibly most useful) trade empty/broken bottles and cans in your inventory for full ones with random contents. This often leads to bottles of poison and sulpheric acid, and cans of school food, but sometimes you get ommel stuffs.
