Shields are items used primarily for blocking incoming blows. However, they are not as useful as it might sound, for they are rather cumbersome and no shield bashing is implemented, while you can both attack and parry with all weapons. On the other hand, shields have a very high roundness and if you use an accurate shield made of wood or light metal, you will block much more attacks than you can parry with any weapon. Don't use heavy, inaccurate shields, though.
Note that if you wield shields in both of your hands, you will kick your enemies, as you cannot attack with your hands.
