History: This page contains historical information about IVAN that may not be implemented in the game.


This page lists various monsters that were planned, but not implemented as of the current iteration of IVAN. The information here is taken from various files within the IVAN source repository, but mostly "Monster Ideas.txt".

Monsters

  • Airavata - giant white war elephant with tusks like mountains.
  • Babel fish - parasitic creature from The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy which instantly translates foreign speech if placed in your ear.
  • Banana slug - odd type of slug strongly resembling a ripe banana. Deadly allergic to salt.
  • Basilisk - petrifies enemies simply by looking at them. Mythological basilisks would kill with their stare.
  • Bees - BEEEEEES!
  • Behemoth - giant sea-dwelling monster resembling a hippo.
  • Black mamba - world's deadliest snake, able to outrun humans.
  • Brainsucker - leaps onto your head and sucks your brains. Can be worn as a helmet. Launched from a special launcher.
  • Briareos - one-hundred-armed, fifty-headed giant who would make anyone panic simply by laying eyes upon them.
  • Butterfly of Storms - would cause random disasters around the dungeon floor. Likely a reference to chaos theory.
  • Carpenter - sells wooden items (likely a shopkeeper)
  • Charybdis - giant sentient whirlpool (alternatively a monster that created whirlpools) from Homer's Odyssey
  • Chocobo - charismatic bird mount from the Final Fantasy series.
  • Cockatrice - similar to a basilisk, would petrify players. In mythology, cockatrices would kill simply by looking at, breathing on, or touching someone.
  • Cow - a common farm bovine. Apparently IVAN's cows have achieved enlightenment, yet only respond with "MU" if questioned.
  • Cyclops - one eyed giant
  • Dark bug - drawn toward darkness.
  • Deep sea blowfish - rapidly expands its size when threatened. Bloating poison could be extracted from its corpse.
  • Dwarf - wield pickaxes and randomly dig walls. Should be able to bribe them with gold.
  • Ent - giant tree people from Middle-earth.
  • Exploding mushrooms - self explanatory.
  • Flying ass - attacks with lightning and chemical weaponry.
  • Flying squirrel - self explanatory.
  • Game abuser - "Stupid monster who has a lair on a secret level where he uses mushrooms, banana peels, broken bottles, gods etc. to gain infinite exp."
  • Giant - extremely large humanoids.
  • Giant anteater - is big and eats ants.
  • Gnome - extremely short humanoids.
  • Golden Eagle - "Hyper-powerful."
  • Gremlin - multiply when they touch water and die horribly when exposed to bright lights.
  • Grid feature - zaps people.
  • The Groke - creature from Moomin that kills anything it comes into contact with and freezes the ground beneath it. Seeks only love and friendship. Has a habit of sitting on fires.
  • High-level thief - self explanatory.
  • Hobbit - short humanoids from Middle-earth. Would have an increased chance to carry rings, especially rings of invisibility.
  • Huge firefly - giant bug that emits light. Would be useful as a pet.
  • Hydra - huge multi-headed snake from Greek mythology able to attack in every direction at once.
  • IVAN developer - able to alter the universe at will, thus more powerful than the gods.
  • Kerberus - attacks with three heads at once.
  • King Kong - 6 meter tall great ape.
  • Knight of Ni - responds with "ni!". At higher levels, would learn to respond with "ekky-ekky-ekky-ekky-z'Bang, zoom-Boing, z'nourrrwringmm."
  • Leviathan/Tiamat - generally any gigantic, horrible, biblical sea monster.
  • Lich - powerful undead, usually former powerful magicians who have bound their souls to an object to attain immortality.
  • Light bugs - attracted to light sources.
  • Mad cow - insane cow. Would drive the player insane if eaten too (probably confusion status).
  • Mimic - sneaky monster that disguises itself as inanimate objects, commonly chests.
  • Miniature black hole - consumes anything and everything in its path. Immune to all forms of damage except for magic (reason given is "thaumic particles are not affected by gravity").
  • Minotaur - powerful half-man, half-bull creature from Greek mythology.
  • Mog - A reoccurring moogle from Final Fantasy.
  • Mola Mola - not an ocean sunfish, but rather a gigantic hybrid of a perch and an octopus whose eyes shine with a sickly green light. Can expend its energy to rapidly regrow muscle and fins, and go into a state of hibernation from which it will fully recover from injury. Stated as being more intelligent than enner beasts.
  • Monkey - primate that would fight for a short time before stealing an item and running away.
  • Monkey 2 - would engrave random sequences of characters on the dungeon floor. Occasionally writes Shakespeare quotes.
  • Monster that can eat metal - no information given.
  • Monsters that engulf others - e.g. slimes?
  • Mountain troll - not a troll that lives in the mountains, but rather a mountain that is a troll.
  • Mummy - preserved Egyptian royalty brought back to un-life.
  • Mutant tentacle - highly intelligent, yet slow purple creatures able to wield human weapons.
  • Mutant turtle - exceptionally good at martial arts.
  • Mutated giant mushroom - mostly stand still, but teleport at random. Would shoot spores at the player, which have a chance to spawn regular mushrooms.
  • Narasimha - half-man, half-lion monster known for its deadly nails.
  • Nightingale - type of bird known for singing at night time.
  • Nuas - legendary sea monster that apparently gave birth to the Mola Mola, as well as other demons. Similar to the leviathan.

  • Scorpion - small arachnid with pincers and a deadly poisonous tail.
  • Scylla - six-headed sea monster and counterpart to Charybdis, sits opposite Charybdis to attack ships who strayed too close to her in order to avoid the whirlpool.
  • Shaman - would randomly curse you and lower the enchantment of a random piece of equipment.
  • Snowman - melts in summer and drops a carrot.
  • Splitting monsters - monsters that would separate into smaller monsters when defeated.
  • Smurfs - "Devout communists."
  • Titan - Absolutely enormous deities from Greek mythology. Overthrown and imprisoned in Tartarus by the Greek gods.
  • Tennyo - Buddhist equivalent of angels that possess a beautiful cloak that allows them to transcend the boundaries of heaven and earth. If this cloak is taken from them they will become the servant of the thief in order to retrieve it.
  • Tooth fairy - common childhood mythological figure. Likely rewarded gifts of teeth with gold.
  • Troll - features ungodly hp regeneration, their troll blood heals anyone it lands on.
  • Vampire - charismatic undead that would be damaged by bright lights.
  • Varaha - divine boar from Hindu legend.
  • Wumpus - tundra creature that would reward the player if caught.
  • Ziz - gigantic man-eating bird monster.
