Axes are presumably the least useful weapons in this game.
Although axes are easy to find and seem just well balanced,
they lack favorable features, and none of named weapons nor
magical weapons are in this category.
There are 3 types of weapons in 'axes' category: the axe, the battle axe, and the pick-axe which is useful for digging.
