Alright, so my first character got killed on the third level of the underwater tunnels due to a stupid lightning wand accident. I then went ahead and started another character by the random name of Tongha Ghae. The particular thread for that character can be found below:

Introduction: This is the second character (out of up to four total tries) in progress in the series called the "Complete N00b's Journey", where I attempt to see how far I get each time despite my n00bish mistakes. This character, has finished the first two levels of the underwater tunnels, so I am now starting a thread for this character as a celebration and to track his further progress. As a reminder for this series, the number before the hyphen signifies the attempt that I am playing, and the number after the hyphen signifies the goal that I have finished. With that, I bring you:

Complete N00b's Journey: Part 2-1

This time, I deal with the monsters with my fists alone and pick up a mermaid hair cloak, a ring of acid resistance, several gas grenades, a broken deep bronze shield, I also get a torso scar from a carnivorous plant and my pet again gets killed by a zombie. On the second level of the underwater tunnels, I find an altar to Cleptia, a wand of invisibility, some healing potions, some poison potions, a boiled leather glove of dexterity +1, and a backpack full of gunpowder. I then fight enough monsters to get to unarmed combat skill level 7 and find an altar to Mellis and a potion of ommel tears, the latter of which I drink. I also kill a kobold that carried a thief’s girdle, boots of kicking, and a ring of electricity resistance. I clear the floor and get a couple of axes in my possession.

So the next goal is again to clear the third level of the underwater tunnels and kill Huang Ming Pong.

The vomit tactic I was referring to involves vomiting at the spot where Huang Ming Pong stands and waiting for his legs to dissolve before challenging him. Is that tactic still valid on this version? And do I have enough gold to buy enough food for this?

I see a forge and an anvil, which are used for crafting. How does crafting work, and when do you use that?

Which is better, a weapon and a shield, or dual wielding two weapons?

Is it better to wield a broken shield with higher AV, or an intact shield with lesser av?

And finally, how do you remove torso scars? Potions of healing? Potions of troll blood? Or do I need to go to someone for this?

The attached pictures show the character’s current stats and inventory.

Any tips to improve this character's survival in his next goal will be appreciated.

Thank you for the tips everyone. Unfortunately, the character suffers a very stupid death that was caused by panic and desperation from an out of depth generation.

YASD #1: Underestimating how frail and weak I am to lightning.

I started by drinking the bottle of ommel tears and explored the third level of the underwater tunnels, where I found an onyx axe, an iron helmet, and a lump of school food. After eating the lump of school food, I get poisoned and vomit, and head back to new Attnam, where I pay quite a bit of gold to get out of very hungry status. I then go back to the third level of the underwater tunnels and attempt to train my unarmed skill, but I run into an elite dark knight, who catches up to me. Being the stupid person that I am, I desperately zap my wand of lightning to try to kill it, only for the bolt to ricochet and kill me in one go.

So, this character was real quick to bite the dust. I’m going to begin my second try later today.

With that, I bring you:

Complete N00b’s Journey: Part 1-1

After finishing the tutorial, I go to the underwater tunnels, where my starting dog gets killed by a zombie on the first level, and find a bronze sickle and pig iron dagger to wield. I also find a pair of troll hide boots and a pair of broken studded leather gloves of strength there. On the second level, I find a bronze short sword, a polar bear fir cloak, and a mammoth ivory bastard sword that I leave behind because it was too heavy to wield with one hand. The levels are cleared without too much trouble, and I end the part upon entering the third level of the underwater tunnels.

My next goal is to clear the third level of the underwater tunnels and dispatch Huang Ming Pong, the sumo wrestler. However, I have several questions for you before I do that though.

I found a bottle full of ommel tears, but am not sure whether I should drink it immediately, or save it. Is there any benefit for waiting until a later time to drink stat boosting potions?

The only piece of body armor I found was a broken steel chain mail that causes stat penalties when worn. Is it still better than no armor, assuming I do not find an alternative?

I think the plan is to train unarmed training to at least 6 by fighting plants in the third level of the underwater tunnels, but how can I get enough food to become bloated and apply the vomit tactic to win the fight? Should I spend the gold at the New Attam store for this task?

Pictures of the current stats of this character are attached.

Any answer to the above questions and other tips would be appreciated.

Thanks for the input folks. All games will be played on version 0.57, since that is the newest version I can find. I will also be choosing a random name to begin each character.

To red_kangaroo: Yeah, loss mode is the permadeath mode in Elona+. No game is a true roguelike without permadeath, and I refuse to play any game that pretends as such without that option. Anyway, my first character has at least survived the first two levels of the underwater series, so check it out in the other thread, which can be found below:

Complete N00b's Journey: Prologue

Hello everybody. This is a n00b who is here to re-start my roguelike tour of duty after I gave up on Elona due to the difficulty understanding the mechanics as well as the inability to deal with its stupid thirst mechanic. Below is my roguelike resume:

Outstanding Nethack experience: Managed to ascend every role at least once in 3.4.3, and still have an excellent playing record in the 3.6 versions.

Exceeds Expectations ADOM experience: Achieved several ultra endings back when it was free and before Steam came into the scene. Haven't played the Steam version due to pricing though.

Exceeds Expectations DoomRL experience: Fully won the game several times, but only up to the Ultra-Violence Difficulty (I like being able to save my games, thank you very much, so hard pass to Nightmare) and even managed to obtain two Diamond Medals from my efforts there.

Acceptable Angband experience: Killed Morgoth after 5 attempts (all 5 characters of which were generated with random states rather than a point-based roller).

Acceptable ZAP'M experience: Won a couple of games, but I got bored of that real fast.

Acceptable Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup experience: Escaped with the Orb in a 3-rune game as a Demigod Fighter after 4 attempts with randomly generated characters.

Acceptable Brogue experience: Escaped with the Amulet of Yendor once after 10 tries.

Acceptable Rogue experience: The deepest I got was level 16 I think.

Poor experience with PRIME: Haven't made it into the robot town.

Poor experience with Elona+: The farthest I made it was in Act 1 to Lesimas: 30 after four tries in Loss mode.

So now I am starting a my new tour of duty with IVAN, under a series titled "Complete N00b's Journey" where I create a character and hope for the best. Something new that I am trying here is that I will only be making four attempts in this game, as I feel that is a sufficient number of tries to see a game’s capabilities. In this series, the number before the hyphen will signify the attempt that I am playing, and the number after the hyphen signifies the goal that I have completed. The first goal for this game that all characters will focus on is to finish the first two levels of the underwater tunnels. This series will continue until I either finally achieve a freedom ending or die four times. If the latter happens, I will be giving my overall impression of this game and be thanking anyone who has helped me in these four runs.

My questions before I begin playing:

Do monsters pursue you if you go up or down levels? The way that monsters pursued me in games like Brogue when you went up the stairs often led to some pretty cheap deaths there.

Which pieces of weapons and armor should I look for in the early game? I heard that large swords like longswords and arcanite alloys for armor are the best option. Or should I look for something else?

Should I train my character in any way before doing the underwater tunnels? I heard that a tactic called banana kicking is not a valid training option.

Is there a way to export your character’s stats in a readable format for other players to consult like you can in Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup or Angband?

Any other tips are appreciated!
