This game is awesome.

It is also super hard.

True, and true.

I read up on the wiki, but still have some unanswered questions.

Do weapon types (blunt, slashing) matter? Do armor types (leather, chain etc) do anything besides have different AR?

The weapon type is used in Accuracy and Strength calculations, eg whips and daggers are very accurate. But they have no invsible secondary effect, at least not that I know of.

Same for armor types. They chance the weight, AR and penalty, but no hidden differences afaik.

Also, any helpful tips for a total noob? Thanks!

Depends on how you die most of the time If you're not afraid of spoilers, you might want to check the "anything relating to ivan you're too lazy to create a new topic for" topic, it has a lot of helpfull little things.

Also, welcome to the forum!

Beat, are you serious? That's terrible news. I don't want a bunch of /b/tards in here. I used to be one, I know what they're like

Well, let's hope we survive this storm. I don't like the sudden influx of 4chaners any more than you do, but at least Ivan gets some deserved attention. Yay optimism!

I know I got my rear whooped in so many different ways.

That's Ivan for you .

Don't think that you know how to play too quickly. It took me years and I'm still mostly stumbling around without any real strategies. Maybe because I'm too stubborn to learn them, but anyway. The most important thing is to be patient. Don't fight if you have a 90% chance of winning, because that'll mean you'll be dead before your 10th fight most of the time. Fight if you're certain to win, run if you're not. And if you don't know what to do, think. Don't just do something. That's what I do wrong most of the time. Can't really give you more advice than that.

Neither. It was written for 0.50. I don't know the book by heart, but if you have trouble following it, maybe Alveradok can help? Also, welcome to the forums!

You could try the 'alternative direction keys' from the option screen. No idea what that will change your keys into, but you can check that ingame with '?'.

Though a carton made of glass that looks like a bottle would be kinda weird...

Weirder than an adventurer that gets his arms and legs blown off, and after some rest, just rolls on?

Apart from big mines and backpacks, Legifer will also blow crystals to pieces. So will a wand of lightning, striking was already mentioned, Oily Orpiv will work as well, if the crystal is next to a wall or other target. Same goes for fireballs. A big mine is not necessary, a small one will do the trick. None of the other wands or items have an effect as far as I can tell, apart from the pickaxe of course. Silva won't do it.

For kicking, LStr doesn't seem to do much (but you still need a certain minimum, I guess.) Boots, and strong ones at that, are necessary. I finally managed to kick the shard with 1000 LStr and valpurium boots of kicking +5.

Also, this is what UT4 looked like in the end:

Summary:
Things that break crystals:
- Mines
- Big mines
- Backpacks full of Gunpowder
- Wand of Lightning
- Wand of Striking
- Wand of Fireballs
- Oily Orpiv
- Legifer
- Pickaxe
- Kicking, if your boots are strong enough

Edit - did I really type backpax?

Welcome on the forums!

Only one tip I can give you that's not on the forums already: Keep trying. You might eventually get there. Or you might end up like me and keep trying for years without ever getting any closer
