What would be the best material for a whip? If I change the material will that affect the lash or handle? I'm assuming the lash, so in that case probably spider silk, but I seem to recall in wizard mode that they hardened to sapphire, and that doesn't seem very effective as a lash..

I like using Pepsi for my whips, but that's highly unlikely to happen, if not entirely impossible outside of wizard mode.
I don't know the exact code, but iirc the whip weapons rely more on the flexibility value of a material than its strength value when determining their damage output. So yes, spider silk is probably the best you can get.

And yes, SoCM changes the lash itself, not the handle.
I've always wanted to be able to change both materials... assuming the second material does nothing weapon-stats wise, it may prove useful to change the handle materials to something ultra-light. Or if it does, maybe heavier materials for the handle result in sturdier weapons?

The handle will only affect weight, nothing else, so a balsa handle beats all.

I haven't got spider silk in there, but you can compare it with GEF whips, which are in there:

Cool, thanks. But there is no way to change the handle material right? So with a whip of thievery I am stuck with whatever material it comes in.... which is what, by the way?

Sapphire. You can check handle materials by using a scroll of golem creation and declining to use the main material.

Oh right, apart from weight I suppose the second material makes the item worth more too.
That's about as useful as turning your limbs to air though.

Air limbs are surprisingly good though.

Or maybe that's just the fart/skunk stink/magic cloud limbs.

Changing handles is possible (change primary to match secondary -> change both to anything), but ill advised. Once both materials match they will ALWAYS match. All non-artifact/magical weapons (that have handles) have wooden handles, which is about as good as you can get. If, for example, you changed your mace to the appropriate wood and then to adamantium, you'd have a really heavy adamantium mace which isn't actually any better than just a normal adamntium mace. The handle's material ONLY affects weight and value.

Hah, yeah gaseous limbs do have some insane flexibility stats. But also really low hp and strength iirc...
Good luck fighting with a crushingly low burden limit and no strength to lift the smallest of weapons.

EDIT: Just did a quick wiz mode test. Air and Skunk Smell (and thus likely all gas material) make for insanely high DEX and AGI, but in return leave you unable to carry anything without being burdened, and result in an ASTR and LSTR of 1. Your fists are pretty damn good in combat though... up until the big baddies spawn because you have stupidly high stats. The guy I tested with, for example, tore through 4 spiders and 1 carnivorous plant in UT1 before an assassin apparated out of the darkness and promptly stabbed him to death because he was physically unable to wear armor. All he had was an iron helmet and the encrypted scroll which put him into burdened status.

Hahaha, I had no idea you could make your limbs air. That's awesome.

Izzy thanks for the point about making materials match.
