I was thinking of modifying the graphical smileys so that : ) wouldn't produce any more. Instead you'd have to use : -) to get the picture. Some of us, me included, don't like the graphical ones and prefer the ones using text characters.

Anyone strictly against it? I'm currently having some problems with deleting them, so it'll have to wait a bit anyway.

They don't bother me. If you use the real post method instead of the quick-reply (which I'm guessing is all anybody uses) there's actually an option to make graphical smilies not display in your post. There might also be an option to turn them off for the whole board. So in otherwords, *shrug*

If you're so worried about Smilies go into the post reply and Disable them. :D

*always uses the real post reply button* >_>

Also, you can as Atomic mentions disable smilies in your profile.

EDIT: After trying it, I see that "Always enable smilies" doesn't work that way. My mistake. Alternatively you could try blocking pictures, or specifically blocking the locations where the most common smileys are. Personally, I'd prefer a "Disable all smilies" option over a smiley change.
