Hey everybody, i recently started playing IVAN and i'm a huge fan of it, it's my first time with a Rogue-like except for TOME (which isn't nearly as merciless).
Recently i have encountered a problem when trying to use a Scroll of detect material, no matter what material i want to detect it says "There is no such material.", Am i doing something wrong or is this a common bug?

you are probably typing the material name incorrectly

I've never had a problem with it. What are you searching for, for example? And welcome!

I don't think it's case sensitive either. I remember having this great idea to search for the material used in the walls to get a picture of the map but the game was all like YOU CANNOT DO THAT, MORTAL.

I don't think there are any materials you aren't allowed to detect, but if you have less than 20 intelligence or so then detecting the wall material will scramble your brain since there's so much of the material:

An enormous burst of geographical information overwhelms your consciousness. Your mind cannot cope with it and your memories blur.

It's not a common bug, but if you're getting that message even with something like iron, then your copy of IVAN probably corrupted itself. Download a fresh copy and see if you still have problems.

That's awesome. The devs really thought of everything. I just played around in Wizard mode. I usually use detect material to find the enner but then getting near him is the problem. If I also detect the walls/tunnels, that would let me easily place myself in a good zapping position...

Brilliant. Now I just need to learn how to properly Sci-Talk so I can always have high enough int for this by the time I get to the Enner.

I am still amazed that new things can be discovered in this game after all this time.

In all seriousness, burning through two detect materials for enner is rather counterproductive for the late game. Of course if you've got plenty and don't intend to go for the knight or high priest ending it's fine, but under normal circumstances you rarely have that many. For me, a proper run for Elpuri takes a minimum of 3 scrolls (GC5, GC7, GC9), more if something goes wrong on the said levels. Going up to Oree needs anything between 0-4 depending on gear quality, meaning in the worst case you'll be looking at blowing 7 or more of them for a high priest run.
IMO enner just doesn't need the map detection, there's plenty of opportunities later to use that scroll.

What do you use them for on GC5, 7, and 9? Frog flesh?

Enner beast flesh, frog flesh, frog flesh. The two latter ones to catch the mystic frog as soon as possible.
