You'll have to clarify as to which stat you're having issues with. However in general I can say that starting statistics are randomized within a range, which means that you will sometimes have 11 leg strength and sometimes start with just 9. Arm strength is mostly only improved by wielding heavy things (such as two-handed swords, maces, and certain quarterstaves), while leg strength is only improved by carrying a lot of weight (you'll see the fastest improvement in this stat while stressed).
Vomiting can be useful for making metallic walls easier to dig through. For example, there is a certain 3x3 vault with no door made of meteoric steel. If you don't vomit on it and don't have, say, an adamantine pick on hand, you're not gonna be able to get through to the chest inside. However, with a few V's on the same wall and a bit of waiting, the wall will rust to the point where you can hack through it with a copper pick. Vomiting on an altar of Scabies also increases your favor with her (though why you'd want favor with her when there are far more useful gods/goddesses to talk to, I don't know). Other than that, vomiting also can be used to decrease your satiation level (which might be handy if you don't want to be bloated/overfed).
Infravision allows you to see warm-blooded invisible creatures, even if they don't possess a mind (which is a necessity for someone using ESP instead).

The Tip aad tricks is the section for this to my knowledge...
Vomiting has another use.
If you vomit on creatures it does damage to them over time
The best use of this is Floating Eyes. If you vomit on them (several times is good) they will eventually perish.
Vomit is my favorite Floating Eye killer.
Though mind you... that it may not be the best strategy...

You can also vomit on doors if you lose your leg(s) and the door is locked, particularly in UT.

If you found it in a chest containing plenty of zomg material, it's a fake. Or, if you are on the mystical dark frog level, the frog makes them go away. But I think that in that case the game would tell you that they teleport away. I'm not sure.

No, if it's teleported away it just says it disappears.

As far as that meteoric steel room goes, using a wand of door creation and unlocking the door also gives you access to the chest.

And if you can't open the chest itself, you can polymorph it into a bunch of high quality stuff!

What a waste! throw the chest at a wall or pray to silva or kick it. Stand over it and fight a golem with no arms while dual wielding shields waiting for the golem to kick open the chest. lots of options.

Gah, that may be, but I still consider polypiling it more creative than ignoring it - and I guess the drop in item "worth" isn't that big.

Creative yes, but I don't know anyone who in their right mind would ignore it.

I was under the impression that polymorphing was a completely random thing. Thus the items you get from polymorphing rocks would be no better than artifacts and valuables.

I totally agree with fluffy. I have tried polypiling with good gear vs balsa sticks and not noticed any difference in the quality of the morphed goods. Thats why I said "what a waste..."

Some of violent methods for opening chests can have negative consequences if the chest contained a wand, or something holy, like a banana or a hand grenade. You can CM, or wish for a key, or look for Izzy who has it, but that's probably not worth it.
(I am not sure, but it seems that the wand of polymorph does not change contents at all...)

I always kick the chest or throw it against the wall. Only very rarely does something bad happen. However if polymorphing does change only the chest then that would make it one of the better ways to access the contents.

I'm fairly sure polymorph only changes the chest.

Yep, only the chest.
