Hey there. A friend of mine just introduced me to IVaN, and I am having some issues. My greatest issue is that I am not really sure how I am supposed to sell items. Buying them is pretty easy to figure out, but selling?

I know there is probably a simple solution, however I could use the help.
Thanks!

Drop them (d) on the floor of the shop. The shopkeeper will offer you a price for whatever you've dropped.
Also welcome to the forums!

Thank you so much for the quick reply. I have been playing for a few days now, and I think that will really help me. ^-^

No problem. You might also want to read up on the library exploit if you can find it and aren't adverse to abusing the system

May I ask who your friend was?

Well, he isn't on the forums as far as I know, so I don't think names would be very helpful. ^-^'

Thanks. I am really not very good at the game, but honestly, it is really fun, and I am sure at some point I will figure out what I am doing wrong. Until then, trial and error.
Thanks for all the warm welcomes. It's appreciated.

Tips, whited out and shrunken in case you want to find them out for yourself:

1) Don't kick down random locked doors in GC unless you're sure of what's inside. There's a shopkeeper who doesn't take kindly to strangers kicking his doors.
2) Wands work wonders on the Enner Beast. Also detect scroll + "enner beast flesh".
3) Keep all flammable/unstable items in a chest to avoid unintentional detonation/burning.
4) Library exploit. But I'll leave that to you to find.
5) If you're playing LIVAN or IVAN CVS then you should read up on my guide on mustard gas grenades. If you can find it.
6) You can teleport Genetrix Vesana off the UT exit.

That's all for now. Also, always remember: "A Wand of Polymorph hath a thousand uses".

Thanks for the tips. They will be put to good use.

Quick question. Do monsters spawn automatically in dungeons? For example, if I wanted to up my character's level a bit, could I just run around the first dungeon a bit even after I think I killed everything?

Again, thanks for all the tips. So far they have been really helpful. ^-^

Eagle V

They don't spawn automatically, though you could leave Jenny alive to have her spawn carnivorous plants, or leave a few magical mushrooms, which will breed. But having a stronger character will result in the game getting a bit harder to balance it out, so grinding isn't always useful.

Oh, ok. That is interesting. I didn't realize that.

I have also been slowly realizing that wands aren't only for selling. Which is what I was previously using them for.

By the way, does anyone's dog actually survive past the first few dungeons? The puppy I get always dies. I have resurrected him before, but is it worth it? Or is it more worth it to wait for a summon golem spell?

Ernomouse

I usually eat the dog. Unless I lose him, and realize this halfway through the next floor. IMO it's only useful in buying me enough time to get away from the first hedgehog in the first few levels where they are a real threat. And against disease bearing zombies, let's not forget about them. Zombies too.

Kenny is for food only. Sometimes he'll eat you when kicked by a poorly equipped character.

Aw. Well it would be cool if he could follow you around forever.

I will let you guys know how my next run goes. Even though it's usually a pretty short run.

If you want to keep him, give him something made of ommel bone to eat.

You can also try to polymorph him into something more useful. If you leave him around one too many carnivorous mutant bunny corpses you might end up with a lion following you instead.

And yes, as mentioned above you can also feed him Ommel Bone things. Armors work well, and may be a better use for them since they'll eventually rot and can end up rotting away at the worst of times.

Well, good news is I am understanding the game a bit more. Bad news is that it is still not helping me stay alive for some reason. Well, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. -_-'

I have been trying to kill the plant mother thing every time. Should I really just be trying to teleport it out with a wand or something? Because right now something I am doing is seriously not working and I usually die as I am fighting her, or right before.

I wouldn't recommend teleporting the mother plant away unless you're fighting it and starting to get killed.
Fighting the mother plant (Genetrix Vesana) will significantly boost your skill with whatever weapon you are currently using, which will come in handy later on. Usually I end up with a weapon's skill at about 12 by the time I'm done with her.

Good things to do to help beat her are:
1) Make sure you have all the best armor available equipped on you. Remember that even a broken piece of armor is better than no armor at all - even if it says it has an AR of 0.
2) Throw poison/sulphuric acid bottles at her before the fight to help drain her health. You could also dip ("!" key) your weapon(s) in poison beforehand. I wouldn't recommend dipping anything in acid apart from whips because whips are unbreakable.
3) Kill the smaller plants first. You don't need them nipping at your sides whilst you're fighting the mother plant.
4) Training a bit more on previous levels always helps.
5) Wands. Use wands of fireballs/striking/acid rain to kill her. You could also use wands of lightning but it's hard to predict where the bolts will bounce and as such you'll probably end up hitting yourself in the groin with them. DO NOT use wands of slow on her, as they seem to actually cast haste.
6) Make sure you aren't burdened/stressed or bloated! Both will impair your fighting abilities. If you're burdened simply drop some stuff you don't absolutely need on the floor somewhere before the fight.
7) If all else fails, get a few hits in and then use a wand of teleportation to remove her from the exit tile.

Maegatr0n

Oh! I haven't used any of the poisons or acids before. That might be helpful. And good to know about the weapon level. I was thinking about just using teleporting on her on the next go, but you have given me a few good ideas. I guess I really don't use wands to their potential. I will be sure to change that.

Thanks for helping me with all of my random questions. It's really helpful.

Good god. I can't believe you all went along with the "no spawns except from Jenny". You lot are a disgrace
#22 Jan 15, 2012, 11:00 pm Hide

Ischaldirh

Acid actually has no effect on plants, so that method is out. Secondly, if you explore the entire level and leave Jenny for last, you'll probably help your chances greatly (you may find better loot, and your weapon skill and possibly some stats will be improved). Lastly, adverse status effects (burdened, stressed, hungry, etc) do, as 4zb4 said, have a huge impact on your combat ability, both hindering your to-hit and dodge chances, and your attack and movement speed. I usually keep a (heavily trapped) pile of loot on the up-stairs on any given UT level.

Well, I just had a good run. I got to the Gloomy Cave level 5 before I was killed by the Enner Beast's scream. Sucks.

Actually, that's pretty good I find it difficult to beat Mr. Enner in any arbitrary game. When it happens for me it's because a whole lot of neat things fall perfectly into place.

Enner is just about minimizing the time spent on GC5 with him alive. Blowing a scroll of detect material on enner beasr flesh, teleporting or running close to him with haste and blasting him with a few fireball blasts works perfectly fine. I rarely if ever have any trouble facing him with any character. Melee should be avoided without some heavily enchanted equipment and high agi/dex scores.
