Hi everyone, i'm back!

Having a little trouble with SoCMing.
I recent found said socm in UT2, and having a reasonably high base intelligence, I wanted a ommel hair limb. Unfortunately, when I enter "ommel hair" it says it doesn't exist. I've also had this problem with most other materials with spaces in their names. And mithril.
So, any help plz?

this seemed like the most relevant place to post this

Check the spelling perhaps? I don't remember if capitalizing makes a difference.

can you post a screenshot? I've never had any trouble with it

You're sure it says it doesn't exist, and not that your mind isn't strong enough? Keep in mind you need 5 more Int to SoCM a material than you do to SoHM the same material.

I think i found out what the problem was.
I think it said that cause my player didn't know what ommel hair was, coz after i found some ommel hair boots it worked...
Unless IVAN was playing with my mind

I think it was just playing with your mind. I regularly wish for (or at least, harden to) materials I haven't seen yet

It's true that IVAN does not allow wishing for materials which the character has not seen yet. However, if your character sees the material, it does not mean that you notice it. Rings and wands are made of lots of special materials, and some good ones can be seen in Attnam. For example, the smith and the tailor wear ommel hair.

Really? I take it then it at least differentiates between wishing and hardening as far as that is concerned?

At least that's what I read somewhere. I cannot find it in changelog nor in the source. Maybe it was just an idea? If it is true, then SoCMing into GEF should be impossible until you get its only sample in the Universe.

Well that's definitely wrong. I've gotten GEF limbs before way before that point in the game. Same with angel hair limbs before seeing angel hair.

Yeah, I agree with U_E

I vaguely remember something of the sort from a long time back. Maybe a feature from a previous version?

What about mithril then? Sometimes it will work for me, other times it won't.
e.g.
What material do you want to wish for?
mithril

THERE IS NO SUCH MATERIAL
------------------------------------------------------------------
...Mithril
------------------------------------------------------------------
THERE IS NO SUCH MATERIAL
------------------------------------------------------------------

Also the player does not notice materials in rings, wands or Helmets of (understanding, brightness etc.).
The player also starts off with knowledge of some materials, and monsters that he has not seen yet.
This may explain why you can wish for some materials but not others.

Well in all reality, you shouldn't be wasting a scroll of change material on ommel hair. Or mithril either for that matter; if you have the Int to create mithril you must be doing pretty good, and you'd be better off training a bit more and making Octiron or Adamant or some such. Also if you have the spare resources and you MUST have mithril, don't forget you can always wish for arcanite and then harden. That only takes 25 int, not 30 like mithril.

Is'nt it possible that you can only wish for materials you have seen or heard about? In that case, you can wish for GEF from the moment the high priest tells you about it. I'm gonna do some research on that.

Ischaldirh

That could be extremely difficult to test. In order to test, say, GEF, you would have to gain the appropriate amount of Int without being able to enter the GC.

An easier test would be with, say, dragon hide. That's not too common, yet doesn't have as high a requirement.

Using wizard mode for raising int doesn't work, you know of every substance once you activate it.

Ok capristo, just for you I will be testing it out.

However, this is on a different computer to the one I was playing it on when it happened.
Screenshot anyway.
I'll try get a screenshot of it happening on my other computer...
