I was wileding Turox and had 2 rings of fire resistance on. I stepped on a mine in GC1 and got the mineexplosion, fine, but then I got "something explodes" or similar which did me in. I had no wands or other explosives in open inventory (I had some in my chest). where did the second explosion come from?

"Something explodes" sounds like another active mine went off near the mine you stepped on. Probably a big mine even, since two rings of fire resistance should keep you alive through two normal mines.
Tough luck.

Can a big mine be generated on GC1?

I don't see why not. I've been hit with an active adamantine beartrap in UT3.

Does Turox explode? Maybe a mine broke Turox and caused an explosion?

Turox doesn't explode when broken.

Well hmm, I guess what I should've asked is, can Turox be set off? If a mine blew up right next to you, could this cause Turox to explode? I seem to remember something like that happening in one of my games.

Nope. Turox explosions only trigger on attack, and not when broken. Sometimes I'll just use broken Turox and not fix it if I find it and don't have fire resistance.

On a more serious note... Perhaps there was an active mine nearby (which would have been hidden from view) which was set off by the first one?
EDIT: Oops, mentioned in first post. My bad.
