Over the years I've heard lots of people grumble about magic mushrooms and how they can ruin a game. Even though I did my MSc studying mushrooms IRL I've never shared my IVAN mushroom strategy. But now, for just three easy payments of 88 gold*, these secrets can be yours.

Here is the secret. Mushrooms (magic and giant) will keep spawning unless you destroy their corpses. When you see a magic mushroom kill it right away and eat it (if you have poly control or can summon a strong pet first) or pick up the corpse and carry it out to the world map where you will never see it again once you drop it. I like to gamble and usually just eat them but you can go in and out of the magic clouds until you get poly control. Once you find one magic mushroom scour the whole level (run) for more. If you don;t find any the congrats - you just got rid of them.

*Alternative payment plans available, just substitute and equal value of gems, loot, or corpses.

Does this work? I thought the reason they got scattered about was because they'd reproduce, then teleport.

I looked in the code, mushrooms have a higher chance of spawning when there are corpses.

What if you stash them in a chest?

Na'ah... MM's are awesome... I always try to leave a level full of them so I can train my dex (by hitting them with scrolls) - with polycontrol and telecontrol they're pretty harmless.

But I do understand that the world is not yet ready for such revelations and DexterityImprovementPlans(TM)...

Anyway I'd never think that their spawning is affected by the corpses - that's a good note.

Their primary danger factor comes from when THEY polymorph, not when YOU polymorph. Nothing quite like a steel golem on GC2.

Or a bunch of invisible, levitating bears...

Invisible, levitating bears... XD... I was once attacked by a freaking Mammoth. A MAMMOTH.

I got castrated by a MM-turned-buffalo on UT 2 A couple games ago...I think it was in LIVAN...

Aw come on, the gear from a tamed elite guard is enough to keep You alive enough long to teleport.

I still wonder what caused Ischaldirth to spawn on UT2 once for me. Maybe it was a damn mushroom with super powers.

If you had a pet and it polymorphed into something pwerful perhaps? Or if you morphed into something like a mammoth but you would have noticed i suppose.

Ok, so, I was just thinking, for GC6 the zombie level, could you eat all of the zombie corpses or something, and at least put a dent in the number that appear? Or do you think the necromancers will summon them more quickly than you eat them?

Alveradok

You CAN clear GC6, but doubt You'll outsmart & outspeed the necromancers alone. But a tamed elite guard and/or mistress was enough for me. Once You kill all, necromancers will spawn one at a time anyway, so it is possible to control the level, and be faster than the necromancers. The key is, as You probably know, to rush directly towards them and kill them ASAP.

And besides,if you ate all the zombies you would have no limbs by the time you reached the stairs.Damn leprosy.

Actually its not all that hard to clear GC6 without a pet.
