IVAN gameplay with prehistoric harsh life.

Equipment and materials will be highly limited. Shorter, come and go missions.
It will make up with more story, items, greater details and less, though tougher, enemies.

Examples: Obsidian tipped spears, raptors instead of mistresses, legbone as a weapon, mammoth hunting to provide food for your cave.

Weapons could be:
Spears
Clubs
Rocks (throwing)

Most weapons made of rock.

Monsters:
Saber tooth tigers
Mammoths
Other cavemen
Dinosaurs (yes I know that's not historically correct, but it'll be cool)
- T Rex, raptors, others

If possible, have a bunch of wildlife. These will be herbivores such as Triceratops, Apatasaurus, giant sloths. They will not attack you, but will defend themselves if you (stupidly) decide to attack. It will be more realistic if there are peaceful animals, and it will also allow you to tackle "enemies" at your own pace

My suggestions

1) Lower or eliminate the rotting rate of Bone weapons so to allow Bone weapons to be an alternate to Rock (Id also suggest a way to make bone weapons... but Crafting may be hard to do)

Actually Ill stop there... I don't want to sound pushy

There's an idea. Slower to rot, but can be broken.

Here is something interesting you may want to consider to give your Caveman RPG more historical references

Early Cavemen (though Cavemen is a bad term... oh well) religiously were Animists... which has nothing to do with animals (well almost nothing)

Basically a representation of something (such as an animal or person) IS that something. So if you threw a rock at a picture of a tiger, then the tiger would get hit by a rock (most likely by you when you hunt it)

Not sure if this will help you at all... or give you any ideas... but I wanted to put it out there

Eddited: I inadvertingly insulted Chaostrom and didn't notice... it wasn't my intention... should be fixed now.

Attack the picture, hurt the real thing. Awesome idea! To prevent its abuse though, you shouldn't be allowed to kill with that method.

Also, I am hard to insult even on purpose, accidental "insults" wouldn't faze me one bit

(I wanna see it now... Heh)

if I remember correctly (remember I am pessimistic) I said something like "Here is something you may want to give your caveman RPG a shred of realism"

Sorry for the Letdown Chaostrom

Also it doesn't have to be "Damage the animal through the picture" it could even be as much as a bonus... You strike that picture with a weapon and that weapon will be better against what that picture depicts

Oh pfft, call that an insult? I've seen worse

And yeah, I like your idea. Maybe it could be in the form of enchantments. That way we can keep that system

raptors instead of mistresses

...in leather clothing, holding whips?

Seriously, I think you should be able to produce a lot of interesting enemies even without throwing in dinosaurs - giant sloths and armadillos, diatrymas (or moa birds), macrauchenias and of course sabre-toothed tigers

As for gameplay, perhaps fire could play an important role, given its early power and associated mysticism... perhaps gods could endow your weapons with it. Neonivek's concept also sounds pretty cool - you could use carvings or figurines instead of scrolls and wands.

Weapons and items could play on the hunting theme - thrown javelins and pit traps. It would be also nice to have some way to reshape items, eg. produce armor from animal hides or use bones for some magic items.

Also, maybe the engrave command could actually be useful.

Holy shit, I'd completely forgotten about the engrave command. It'd actually have a use here!

If not too hard to make, tribes. Of course there can still be cavemen without a tribe also. And instead of Dark Mages and Necromancers there could be tribal shamans: tada! Ichardihl the Shaman of Ogg

Maybe instead of gods, you could find slates of carving, that would give power to certain things you engrave. Such as elbereth from nethack.

It is widely believed, that stone age hunters shot at pictures painted on cliffs to make arrows hit better. At least, they have found hundreds of broken arrowheads next to paintings in various places.

Dumb Shit

Is anyone actually working on this?
#16 Mar 25, 2008, 2:29 am Hide

chaostrom

Nope. But it's a good idea, and no harm'll come of working it out before it's made

Haha, I actually wanted to try doing a pseudo-version of this on my own, but gave up after a few mysterious errors after messing with the data files (mainly in the material area)

(still, those obsidian swords and wicker whips...)

I actually originally planned to make an RPG version of MY game whenever I finished working on it. But I've been too lazy to even work on my own game. So then I just posted about it here in hopes that somebody less lazy than me would apply it to Ivan

There we go we have exact confirmation from Arcane that Chaostrom is the binary opposite of Arcane

Should they ever touch the explosion could destroy half the internet

Alright back on dirrect topic

I could try to help with some of the work that I can do (I don't have that much skill)... Ill see what I can do and Ill post it here if I come up with anything.

I got bored and actually got back to implementing prehistoric-esque Cave Ivan idea-esque stuff:

I didn't touch materials so far. Since I lack the awesome skills to edit the CVS and since IVAN hates getting rid of things (weapon types, materials, etc.), I've used default categories (sometimes renamed).

One thing I forgot to screenshot is that the cans have been changed into bowls.

I was also thinking about changing UT into a glacial tunnel.

Ps. The torch is animated. Took me a while to figure out how to do it.

(one minor detail you may notice is that I've replaced helmets with masks, which shows on the character status menu)

Ps. If anyone to use this stuff, feel free to ask - if I add some more things and the game will be actually fun to play, I'll upload it.

Wow, Cerumen, This is looking pretty cool now. Is the stationary mammoth behemoth along the lines of danger that baby mammoths are? If so, isn't that a lot more deadly than Genetrix?
