Try buying some food from the shop in Attnam. They have enough bananas for everyone (who can pay).

You start with some gold, so if you don't spend it all in New Attnam (yeah, damned leprosy), you can go shopping in Attnam. Or just sell something.

Also another tip. When I was first playing i would starve to death so much

You can use the l (lowercase L) in the world map to find the cave first, before heading in that direction. That way you don't have to wander around searching for it. Of course... sometimes the route to get there is not as direct as you'd hope
