As I have done before in the past, I made the classic mistake of trying to buy something while Saal'thul was equipped. I said "y" to the question I thought was about wether or not to buy, soon after realizing I said "y" to stealing instead.

I managed to escape the town with my life (though without my valuable mirroring wand and some enchantment scrolls) but now I am stuck with no easy repair method as well as losing access to all scrolls in the library. (Unless I can become powerful enough to take the town, you never know...)

Anyways, my main question is in the subject. Is there any known way to pacify the whole town again? Mind you, running around trying to tame or charm things that can lay me out in a turn or two is not a likely option. I don't expect there is one, but I figured I would query the most knowledgable on the subject to make sure. If there isn't, I'll just do what I was planning, keep moving deeper.

Nope... you're pretty well SOL. On the bright side the only win now available to you is chaos or High Priest.

Wait... is high priest still available? Doesn't the town need to still be alive?

Nope, you could decimate the town and still get high priest.

Once after I killed Petrus, everyone else stopped fighting. I haven't been able to repeat this. Maybe I killed him without harming anybody else?

Thank you all for your quick replies, I had figured as much.

Just FYI, I ended up making it down to GC 7, the floor with the mystic dark frog, and had trouble with it since I lacked any form of see invisible. I did have teleport control, two angels, two baby mammoths, and two diamond golems to help me hunt him down. I ended up losing all the golems and an angel in the hunt, but I got him myself by finding and eating a floating eye then finding him, teleporting adjacent to him, and stabbing him to death. This was probably the most trouble I have ever had with him, since I don't think I have ever reached him without some sort of see invisible. It certainly makes him nasty. Oh, I was killed shortly after though, by a single critical hit to the chest from an orc officer's halberd. My armor was just the basic Arcanite Plate Mail (can't remember if it came with a plus or not...) one gets from praying to Avatus. It should have been improved, however this is what happens when my town resources get cut off.

Still, yet another interesting experience for me to remember in future attempts.

Yeah I hate that being invisible makes you steal stuff. Can't they detect you anyway if they're pissed off at you? So how come they can't see you when you just want to buy something

Ideally, the only way they'd know *you* were the thief was if they caught you wearing something that was stolen after the invisible thief escaped the town (and/or, of course, if they knew you had items that granted invisibility and noticed enough disappearances of you and items). Unfortunately that's very likely a difficult thing to code.

That would be too easy to abuse.

I hate when you are invisible and think you are selling a bunch of stuff at the store but then reallize you just donated 3000 gp worth of booty to the store because you weren;t paying attention to the "the shopkeeper cannot see you. Are you sure you still want to drop this?"

Though not quite as bad as stealing, I agree that this is quite a displeasing result as well. Then again, at least when you steal, you profit.

yeah if you accidently steal one thing then you might as well clean out the store and the library before you leave town.

That is, if you can make it before Petrus and his archangels catch up

You can do it pretty easily, they're not that fast and guards can't see you.

they are easy to evade with telecontrol.

Weird - I usually notice the "stealing stuff" message (because I usually check the price of stuff I take/sell). Although it *is* bizarre that people can talk to you when invisible, but still won't let your trade.

My favourite way to piss off Attnam is still accidentally praying to Legifer.
